Two-time major winner Angel Cabrera arrested in Brazil on 5 years' worth of charges
Two-time major golf champion Ángel Cabrera was arrested in Brazil on Thursday and will be extradited to his home country of Argentina for five years worth of alleged crimes that include assault and theft, the Associated Press reported.
The former Masters and U.S. Open championship winner was on Interpol’s red code list. Red Notices are issued for wanted fugitives and is a request for law enforcement around the world to locate and provisionally arrest the person pending extradition.
Cabrera faces assault charges
Cabrera, 51, is charged by Argentine officials with assault, theft, illegal intimidation and repeated disrespect to authorities, per a police statement. He was arrested in an upper class area of Rio de Janeiro, per the AP, but was not publicly identified by police authorities. Two officers confirmed to the AP his identity.
Cabrera’s ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, reportedly filed tow charges against him earlier in January. Cecilia Torres, a former partner, said Cabrera punched her, threatened her and attempted to run her over with his car in 2016, per the report by Argentine media.
Cabrera top golfer in South America
The professional golfer is the most accomplished one from South America with a win at the U.S. Open in 2007 — he defeated Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by one shot — and a Masters playoff victory in 2009. He also lost a playoff at the Masters in 2013 to Adam Scott.
He’s a four-time European Tour winner, including a victory at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and has an additional win on the PGA Tour.
Cabrera did not compete at the rescheduled 2020 Masters. It was the first time since 2000 he was not at Augusta to compete. He had announced in October he was having surgery on his left wrist. He did play on the PGA Tour Champions circuit for those 50 and older a total of five times in August and September.
