Two men named as victims in fatal head-on DUI crash in Fresno, CHP says. Driver arrested

Two men who died in a crash as a result of an alleged drunken driver were identified Wednesday by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.

The head-on DUI crash happened about 4:10 p.m. Friday near Easton, California Highway Patrol said.

Guadalupe Sandoval, 67, and Ubaldo Palacio, 64, both of Fresno died at Community Regional Medical Center, according to the coroner’s office.

CHP said Jamie Figueroa, 66, was driving south on Elm Avenue in a silver 2016 Hyundai Sonata and approached a four-way stop at American Avenue.

He swerved into oncoming traffic, CHP said, because of his intoxication. The Hyundai hit a gold 2002 Pontiac Grand Am head-on, causing the injuries that killed the driver and his passenger.

Figueroa suffered serious injury, CHP said.

He was arrested on suspicion of DUI as well as vehicular manslaughter, and is expected to be booked into Fresno County Jail when he’s released from the hospital, CHP said.

A third car, a 2005 Honda coupe that was following the Pontiac, ended up in a ditch as the driver avoided the collision that unfolded in front of him.

He had minor injuries, CHP said at the scene.

A man who was driving a Pontiac sedan died from a head-on collision Friday evening near the intersection of Elm and American avenues in Easton. California Highway Patrol in the Fresno area arrested a man in a Hyundai sedan for driving under the influence after he was determined he swerved onto head-on traffic and caused the fatal crash.
