Two hospitalized with injuries in separate Livingston County crashes

LIVINGSTON COUNTY — The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a pair of crashes Tuesday that resulted in serious injuries.

Deputies were dispatched at 1:28 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, to a crash involving a transit van and motorcycle on Argentine Road near Sedge Lane in Deerfield Township.

Preliminary investigation showed, at the time of the crash, road construction on Argentine Road closed the roadway to a single lane of travel. Traffic on the roadway was being controlled by flaggers at each end of the construction zone.

A 2021 Harley Davidson Street Glide, driven by a 69-year-old Fenton man, was stopped in the roadway by a flagger, according to LCSO. As the motorcycle stopped, it was rear-ended by a 2019 Ford transit van driven by a 45-year-old Southgate man.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken to Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc by Livingston County EMS in serious condition, according to LCSO. He wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the transit van wore a seatbelt and was not injured.

Distracted driving appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to LCSO. The road was closed for roughly four hours for investigation and clean-up.

Deputies later responded at 9:52 p.m. Tuesday to a crash involving a single vehicle on west I-96 east of US-23 in Brighton Township.

Preliminary investigation showed a 2015 Nissan Rogue, driven by a 79-year-old East Leroy woman, was traveling east in the westbound lanes of travel on I-96. As the vehicle continued east, it drifted off the right side of the roadway and struck the end of the barrier wall.

The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Ascension Providence Hospital — Novi Campus by Livingston County EMS in critical condition. She was the only person in the vehicle and wore a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Speed and alcohol don’t appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
