Two Chicago police officers shot, one in critical condition
Two Chicago Police Department officers were shot early Sunday morning, according to officials.
The officers, who have not been publicly identified, were working in Lawndale when they were shot, according to spokesman Tom Ahern.
Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.
Police Superintendent David Brown said officers responded to a ShotSpotter signal and found a man in a vacant alley around 7:30 a.m. The suspect immediately began firing on the responding officers, hitting one in the hand and the other in the leg and shoulder, above the vest. The first officer was hospitalized in good condition and the second critical, but stable, Brown said.
Both were released from the hospital around noon.
The suspect was also shot and was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment. His condition is unclear.
“This offender had no regard for their position as police officers. No regard. And began trying to kill them,” Brown said.
A gun, presumed to belong to the suspect, was recovered at the scene.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who appeared at the press conference with Brown, asked for a prayer for “peace in our city.”
Sixteen Chicago police officers have been shot in the past 15 months, according to Brown.
