Southgate Bowling Lanes : A Look Back

Southgate opened its doors on April 23, 1960, and closed its doors in the late 90s (That's what we found but someone may correct us).

As young boys, we were always fascinated with the Southgate Bowling Alley. In the 70s, we would go there with our cousins Teri, Roy and Deidra Dixon to watch our Aunt Margaret and Uncle Buddy bowl. To this day, we can hear the sounds of bowling pins crashing, the sound of pinball machines and the smell of cigarette smoke every time we drive by the old building.

Although we were never great bowlers, we always loved watching others bowl. There were always families there and it was nice seeing all of the company bowling leagues compete against one another. You could usually find us playing pool when we were not bowling gutter balls!

To be able to walk in there just one more time and experience that sense of community would be amazing! The last time I was in that building was in the early 90s when our singles group from the church met there to bowl. Little did I know, when I walked out that night walking a girl to her car it would be my last memory of that wonderful place!

To all of the people who bowled there, we just wanted to say thanks for those great memories and please feel free to share your memories and pictures!!
