New detail revealed for Clemson football’s anticipated home game vs. Notre Dame

Clemson-Notre Dame 2023 has a TV channel.

ESPN announced Tuesday that the marquee matchup between the Tigers and the Fighting Irish will be televised on ABC. The kickoff time for that much-anticipated Saturday Nov. 4 meeting in Death Valley is to be determined.

The longtime ACC school and longtime independent school have developed quite the football rivalry in recent years thanks to a conference scheduling agreement and some timely postseason matchups.

After playing just twice in Clemson’s first 119 seasons of existence, the teams will meet for the sixth time in nine seasons this fall. The Tigers lead the all-time series 4-3, including wins in the 2018 College Football Playoff semifinals and the 2020 ACC championship game.

But Clemson lost 35-14 to Notre Dame on the road last season, which was a major non-conference blow to the Tigers’ 2022 College Football Playoff hopes and a major boost for the Fighting Irish in coach Marcus Freeman’s first season.

The Tigers ended up going 11-3 with an ACC championship win over North Carolina and Orange Bowl loss to Tennessee. Notre Dame finished 9-4 with a win over South Carolina in the Gator Bowl with Freeman, who replaced Brian Kelly when he left to coach LSU, at the helm.

Clemson and Notre Dame finished No. 13 and No. 18, respectively, in the AP’s final top 25 for the 2022 season and currently rank No. 9 and No. 14 in ESPN’s way too early top 25 for the 2023 season.

Both teams have plenty to be excited about entering the fall. Clemson returns a host of all-conference defenders and will be breaking in a new quarterback-offensive coordinator combo with Cade Klubnik and Garrett Riley, while Notre Dame added Wake Forest transfer quarterback Sam Hartman to its always-talented roster.

The 2023 Notre Dame game will mark the program’s first trip to Death Valley since 2015. It’s also perhaps the most anticipated home game on Clemson’s schedule, rivaled only by the Sept. 23 game against Florida State. FSU, coming off an excellent 10-3 season, is widely viewed as top challengers to the Tigers for the ACC crown.

Notre Dame will also play five other ACC teams this season as part of long-running scheduling agreement that dates back to 2014, when the Fighting Irish joined the ACC for every sport except for football.

The Clemson-Notre Dame TV channel is the first bit of schedule news to be released since the ACC released full schedules for Clemson and the rest of its teams in January.

The conference is expected to release TV channels and kickoff times for each team’s first three games later this summer. Last year, that announcement came on May 26.

Along with releasing the Clemson-Notre Dame TV channel, ESPN also released TV channels and/or kickoff times for three other marquee matchups on its networks this fall: LSU vs. Florida State on Sunday Sept. 3 (7:30 p.m., ABC); Texas at Alabama on Saturday Sept. 9 (7 p.m., ESPN); and Oklahoma vs. Texas on Saturday Oct. 7 (ABC).
