Tuscarawas County roundup: German fest in Historic Zoar Village, Fort Laurens opens

Maifest German festival is May 10-11

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village will celebrate its annual Maifest German festival from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. May 10 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 11.

Visitors can celebrate the coming of spring with traditional German brats, roasted chicken, Cleveland Kraut sauerkraut and craft beers provided by Lockport Brewery, Wooly Pig Farm Brewery, Hoodletown Brewing Company and Maize Valley Winery and Brewery.

Guests will be able to buy, sell and receive free appraisals for authentic German beer steins at the Stein Center’s German beer stein booth.

Additionally, there will be live German music throughout the event featuring local music artist Down Und Kraut, Lulu’s Button Box Revue and Gemütlichkeit Cleveländer Musikanten.

Guests can also attend the sixth annual All-Marques German Car Show from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Car owners can register on the day of Maifest or can pre-register by calling 330-874-3011 or by emailing zoarinfo@zca.org. Registration for the car show is $10. Proceeds benefit preservation and educational activities at Historic Zoar Village.

Other activities include Plein Air painting, a traditional sauerkraut-making demonstration, special tours of the new “Best of Zoar” and “Scene Around Zoar” exhibits, games and make-and-take art projects for kids, and Maypole.

Fort Laurens opens Saturday

BOLIVAR – Fort Laurens Museum opens for the season Saturday and will launch its free speaker series at 11 a.m. in the Fort Laurens theater.

Tom O'Grady will present "Not Since Tecumseh: Darkness at Midday over the Ohio Country; Total Eclipse of the Sun,” sharing the history around the Ohio 1806 eclipse and how Tecumseh, a Native American, used his knowledge of the eclipse to shake up the political dynamics in Ohio.

O’Grady is an instructor of observational astronomy at Ohio University and the Southeast Ohio History Center’s director of outreach and director emeritus. He has observed eight solar eclipses and has spent 25 years researching Ohio’s geography and settlement.

Living history interpreters from the 13th Virginia will be hosting 18th-century programs and activities throughout the weekend. Opening weekend festivities are free for all visitors. Any donations received during opening weekend will go toward the preservation and educational efforts of Fort Laurens.

Lunch & Learn topic is Tuscarawas County tourism

DOVER − Diane Lautenschleger of the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau will be the speaker for the Dover Public Library Lunch & Learn at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. She will talk about how tourism helps the Tuscarawas County economy and will highlight tourist destinations in the county. All participants will receive a free lunch ticket to be used later at the Senior Center dining room.

The Lunch and Learn programs are on the first Wednesday of every month at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. For more information, contact Library Linda at the Senior Center or call the library at 330-343-6123.

Forestry group to meet Wednesday

DOVER − The East Central Ohio Forestry Association will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St. Moriah E. Hinton, attorney at EQUES Law Group, will be the featured speaker. She will cover general estate planning considerations and accept questions from the audience.

The East Central Ohio Forestry Association is an organization of people interested in forestry-related topics and improving their woodlands. The public is welcome at the free monthly meetings.

Foundation grant requests due May 22

DOVER − Grant requests from the Reeves Foundation is May 22.

The Reeves Foundation was founded in 1966 by businessman Sam Reeves Jr., with funding in part from his two sisters.

Delphian Chorale seeks votes in contest

NEW PHILADELPHIA − New Philadelphia High School's Delphian Chorale has been entered into a contest with 97.5 WONE to sing with Foreigner for Foreigner's Farewell Tour at Blossom in June, according to Choral Director Kristi Prucha. Scholarship golf outing is May 17

NEW PHILADELPHIA − Kent State University at Tuscarawas is sponsoring the 23rd annual Scholarship Golf Outing on May 17 at Oak Shadows Golf Club. The four-player, 18-hole scramble registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and a shotgun start is at 10 a.m. Greens fees include lunch at the turn and steak dinner.

The registration deadline is May 10. All proceeds benefit Alumni Legacy Scholarships for students at Kent State Tuscarawas.

Scio Volunteer Fire Department open house

SCIO − The Scio Volunteer Fire Department will have an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. May 5 to showcase the recently completed $1.2 million addition, which includes a truck bay and a storage room for the Scio Summer Fest equipment. Another storage room is upstairs.

The Scio Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection for the village of Scio, North Township, Stock Township and mutual aid to anyone requesting it.

NEW PHILADEPHIA – Buckeye Career Center will host its fifth career and technical education signing day to honor students who have committed to full-time employment following graduation. This will include students who have enlisted in the military. The event is planned for May 8.
