Medicine is focus of Civil War Round Table program

DOVER − The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room at the Dover Public Library. Jeanne Cox will present Civil War Medicine. Attendees will learn about the state of medicine at the beginning of the Civil War and the important changes that quickly developed out of necessity for immediate and long-term care of the large numbers of wounded on the battlefield.

Tuscarawas Masonic Lodge open house

DOVER − Tuscarawas Masonic Lodge No. 59, 735 N. Wooster Ave., will hold anopen house from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Anyone who would like to know more about Freemasonry or would like a peek inside may attend.

Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest men’s fraternity in the world. The origins of Freemasonry are rooted in the guilds of stonemasons, who built castles and cathedrals during the Middle Ages. Fire department holds quarter auction

MINERAL CITY – Mineral City Volunteer Fire Department will hold its spring quarter auction at 6 p.m. Saturday at the fire station, 8448 Short St. Admission is $5 per person for a single paddle. Additional paddles are $2 each. Snacks will be available. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. A virtual option is offered for those unable to attend in person. 5K planned for May 4

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Public Library System will host its eighth annual 5K on May 4. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the race begins at 10 a.m. Participants in this Star Wars-themed May the Course Be With You 5K will start at the main library, run through Tuscora Park, and back to the library.

Runners interested in participating can stop into one of the county library’s five locations (Main Library, Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek, or Tuscarawas) to complete and turn in a registration form. Runners are encouraged to dress to fit the Star Wars theme.

Registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids (kindergarten through age 17). Awards will be given to the top three male, female, and youth who participate. ICrafts, Jedi training, corn hole, galaxy maze and photo booth will be available after the race. A costume contest will be held at noon. Proceeds from this year’s 5K will benefit the Library System’s Summer Reading Program at all five locations.

Learn about ticks and tick-borne illnesses

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The New Philadelphia City Schools, in partnership with the Tuscarawas Parks Department and The Ohio State University Extension, will host a program exploring ticks and tick-borne illnesses from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at New Philadelphia High School.

It will include presentations on the ecology of ticks and tick-borne pathogens from Dr. Risa Pesapane, director of the Parasite and Pathogen Ecology Lab at The Ohio State University, and on diagnosing tick-borne illnesses by Dr. Leanne Garrett, a public health entomologist with the Ohio Department of Health.

New Philadelphia High School students involved in New Philadelphia's Appalachian Ohio Tick Project will host a variety of learning stations where attendees can use microscopes to learn to identify medically important tick species and observe different tick life stages and their seasonal occurrence, learn how to enjoy the outdoors and avoid getting bitten by ticks, and observe how the students at NPHS collect and test ticks for pathogens.

Nostalgic concerts planned at Ohio Star Theater

Homeschool Day at Zoar Village

ZOAR – Historic Zoar Village will host a Homeschool Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 19, where home-schooled students learn how the Zoar Separatists prepared for spring through a variety of hands-on activities including a bread relay, butter churning, planting seeds and tinsmithing. Students will also visit the blacksmith, the dairy, the laundry and other buildings.

Zachary Davis Scholarship

DOVER − Applications are being accepted until April 15 for the Zachary Davis Memorial Scholarship. This year, scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to five high school seniors in Tuscarawas County.

Anita Davis, Zachary’s mother, created the Zachary Davis Memorial Foundation after his death from a drug overdose. Helping others through drug abuse prevention education and scholarships for area seniors pursuing a career related to addiction are just two ways the group is striving to give back.

“We award scholarships to seniors in Tuscarawas County who are looking to further themselves in an addiction recovery-related field,” she said. "Our goal is to help empower those who want to make a difference."

Applications are available at www.zachsstory.org. The Scholarship Selection Committee will judge them on the following parameters: completed application; written statement of career goals (at least 250 words); school transcript; letter of recommendation.

Flower-making craft at library Friday
