Tuesday may be the day Stage 2 drought arrives in Corpus Christi.

The next step in the city’s continuing drought conditions is expected to be declared Tuesday.

Combined lake levels – Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon Reservoir – dropped to 29.9% as of Sunday. Monday morning, the levels remained the same.

It’s now anticipated Stage 2 drought will be declared 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to city officials.

Corpus Christi has been in Stage 1 drought for approaching a year, since June 2022.

Stage 1 drought is declared when combined lake levels drop below 40%. Stage 2 drought is declared when lake levels sink below 30%.

It will be the first time Corpus Christi has experienced Stage 2 drought in nearly a decade, according to city officials.

Modeling last week showed the likelihood of Stage 2 drought within days.

When stage 1 drought restrictions are in effect, residents must limit landscape irrigation using an irrigation system or sprinklers to only one day every week.

That is decreased under Stage 2 drought restrictions, which permits landscape irrigation with an irrigation system or sprinklers to only one day every other week.
