Tucker Carlson news — live: Murdoch ‘ordered’ Fox News firing as AOC, Jon Stewart and Trumps lead reaction

Fox News and its biggest star, Tucker Carlson, was reportedly fired by the network’s owner, Rupert Murdoch.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, comedian Jon Stewart, and news reporters at Fox News reacted — mostly with celebration — to the news.

Mr Carlson's last broadcast was on Friday 21 April. He was not given a chance to say good-bye or issue a sign-off.

Fox News Tonight will air in Carlson’s time-slot featuring a rotating roster of hosts until the network chooses a new permanent host.

Carlson’s departure comes less than a weeek after Fox News announced it would pay Dominion Voting Systems a $787m to settle the latter’s demation lawsuit. Dominion sued Fox News for boosting lies that the ballot technology company participated in widespread voter fraud during the 2020 election.

As The Independent reports, Carlson left behind a legacy of bringing far-right ideas and racism to mainstream audiences.

Carlson latest in string of high-profile Fox News oustings

Tucker Carlson has been ousted by Fox News, where he hosted the conservative cable network’s most popular program.

He is the latest high-profile Fox News personality to be forced out by the network, which just last week agreed to pay nearly $800 million to settle a lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems over false election claims.

Here’s a look at other notable people who had a successful run at Fox before their abrupt departures.

What the Tucker Carlson Dominion texts said about Trump

04:05 , Namita Singh

Fox News star host Tucker Carlson has left the popular right-wing cable news network. Fox announced Carlson’s shock departure in a brief statement on Monday 24 April, saying both sides had “agreed to part ways”.

While the exact reason for Carlson’s departure is not yet clear, his name had cropped up in court filings by Dominion Voting Systems, the company that launched a massive defamation suit against Fox News over the network’s coverage of the 2020 presidential election and Mr Trump’s bogus claims that the contest was “rigged”. Less than a week ago, Fox settled with Dominion for an eye-popping $787m. Now Carlson himself is out at the network.

Dominion, a manufacturer of voting machines, had argued that its reputation was damaged by Fox anchors like Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Lou Dobbs spreading conspiracy-minded speculation on air that they themselves did not believe.

Fox News staffers celebrate Tucker Carlson’s departure

04:00 , Graig Graziosi

Fox News staffers speaking anonymously to Rolling Stone celebrated the departure of Tucker Carlson from the network on Monday.

“Pure joy. No one is untouchable. It’s a great day for America, and for the real journalists who work hard every day to deliver the news at Fox,” one reporter told the outlet.

Another staffer said “good riddance” and called the move a “morale boost,” while a producer at the network worried Carlson would be replaced by “someone who is just like him.”

As previously reported by The Independent, Carlson was reportedly loathed by those in the network’s news division, with a source telling The Daily Beast that “Tucker is a joke,” and that he “makes our jobs harder and way more dangerous,” noting that they did not “know many in the news division that likes or respects him.”

VOICES: How Tucker Carlson built an empire off being a ‘giant phony'

03:30 , Josh Marcus

As Tucker Carlson’s time at Fox News comes to an end, so too does his reign as one of the most prolific propagandists in modern American history.

Carlson, who on Monday achieved the dubious honour of having been fired from all three major US cable news networks, found success as a performer, an activist and a partisan who manipulated and moved his audience in a way few others could. That audience included presidents, former presidents, hate-watching liberals, rank-and-file conservatives and every Republican lawmaker under the sun.

He found success on Fox by going further than any of his predecessors beyond the bounds of acceptability. From his primetime perch, he spewed bigotry, parroted white nationalist talking points and promoted conspiracies and falsehoods from behind a facade of journalistic inquiry.

Most of that inquiry was, of course, skin deep. His output seemed designed to annoy liberals rather than to uncover any great truth, and it was important for him to annoy liberals because they annoyed him. Carlson is a man of such immense privilege and conceit that he built an entire personality around the refusal to be corrected or challenged in any way. He knowingly told lies and entertained conspiracies to prove that he could say whatever he wanted.

Richard Hall looks back on the life and lies of Tucker Carlson.

Tucker Carlson teases his next steps with mysterious website post

The media rumour mill is abuzz with speculation about what former Fox News host Tucker Carlson will do next.

The man, once the most-watched figure in cable news, clearly understands how to cultivate an audience, so it’s no surprised he indulged in a bit of the hype on Monday.

On Carlson’s website, fans were encouraged to sign up for updates to “find out what Tucker’s up to next.”

What is Tucker Carlson’s next move?

01:33 , Josh Marcus

In what would turn out to be his final show on Fox News on Friday, Tucker Carlson interviewed a pizza delivery guy who had gone viral for helping police catch a would-be thief.

Laughing hysterically as he ate from pizza boxes spread out on the set, Carlson signed off with the words: “We’ll be back on Monday.”

He would not.

Just after 11am on Monday, Fox News said in a statement it had agreed to “part ways” with the right-wing extremist effective immediately.

Reports in the Los Angeles Times suggest that Fox Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch had personally decided to pull the trigger on his top-rating prime-time host, with input from the board and senior executives. He was reportedly informed on Monday morning.

It came six days after the network settled its defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5m over its embrace and promotion of lies that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

The unstoppable rise and sudden downfall of Tucker Carlson

Monday 24 April 2023 22:20 , Graig Graziosi

The Independent’s Josh Marcus writes:

Tucker Carlson’s invincibility spell may have finally worn off.

On Monday, Fox News announced it was abruptly cutting ties with the hugely popular host, the most widely-viewed cable news figure in the country. The decision seemed to be a last-minute one: Carlson, who started at the network as a contributor in 2009, didn’t say goodbye to his audience on air and told viewers he would see them on Monday.

The conservative broadcasting juggernaut has endured advertiser boycotts, calls for his resignation from civil rights leaders, and a view, as The New York Times put it, that his programme “may be the most racist show in the history of cable news,” yet continued to grow his mammoth audience to an average of nearly 3.5m viewers a night in 2022. For a time, Republican gossip suggested Carlson should be the party’s presidential candidate in 2024.”

VOICES: Tucker Carlson reshaped the Republican Party in his own image

Monday 24 April 2023 22:00 , Graig Graziosi

The Independent’s Eric Garcia writes in his latest VOICES piece:

“The news that Tucker Carlson has “parted ways” with Fox News, the right-wing news network that survived a potentially ruinous lawsuit by a voting machine company, has sent shockwaves throughout the media and political spheres.

Carlson began by being the butt of Jon Stewart’s jokes on CNN and a lackluster tenure at MSNBC before he founded The Daily Caller. He later flouirshed as an extremely popular conservative pundit on the top-rated cable news network. Now, he won’t even be able to bid farewell to his rabid fan base, whom he has whipped up with a mix of anti-immigrant xenophobia, election denialism and vaccine misinformation.

Liberals may be tempted to celebrate his demise while conservatives may express utter disbelief that a cash cow like Carlson could be dropped so unceremoniously. Undoubtedly, Carlson will be replaced by someone even more right-wing, someone who knows how to pluck the right notes of white grievance that enchants and entrances the primetime viewer slot on Fox, just as Carlson did when he assumed the throne from its previous occupant, Bill O’Reilly.

But Carlson’s footprint on the modern-day Republican Party cannot be erased.”

Laura Loomer offers anti-Semitic explanation for Tucker Carlson’s reported firing

Monday 24 April 2023 21:29 , Graig Graziosi

MAGA commentator Laura Loomer offered up an anti-Semitic explanation for why Carlson was reportedly fired from Fox News; the “globalists” have worked to silence truth-tellers.

The American Jewish Committee notes that “globalist” is often used “a coded word for Jews who are seen as international elites conspiring to weaken or dismantle “Western” society using their international connections and control over big corporations (see New World Order)—all echoing the destructive theory that Jews hold greed and tribe above country.”

She lumps Carlson in with other “effective conservative communicators” including Info Wars’ Alex Jones, former Donald Trump hatchetman Roger Stone, and former Project Veritas ambush interviewer James O’Keefe. All three have faced legal consequences for lying. Mr Stone was sentenced to prison before he was pardoned by Mr Trump.

Statements from attorneys representing former Fox News staffer who claims network rife with misogyny and chauvinism in lawsuit

Monday 24 April 2023 19:50 , Graig Graziosi

Abby Grossberg, formerly a producer at Fox News, claims the network tried to silence her after she complained it fosters a “toxic workplace” where “truth remains a fugitive,” depicting an environment where women are routinely verbally violated “by a poisonous and entrenched patriarchy.”

Here are her and her attorney’s comments following the departure of Tucker Carlson from the network:

“Tucker Carlson’s departure from Fox News is, in part, an admission of the systemic lying, bullying, and conspiracy-mongering claimed by our client, former top producer, Abby Grossberg. Mr. Carlson and his subordinates remain individual defendants in the S.D.N.Y. case and we look forward to taking their depositions under oath in the very near term,” Tanvir Rahman, one of Ms. Grossberg’s attorneys, said.

“This is a step towards accountability for the election lies and baseless conspiracy theories spread by Fox News, something I witnessed firsthand at the network, as well as for the abuse and harassment I endured while Head of Booking and Senior Producer for Tucker Carlson Tonight. I think this is great for America! It’s a big win for viewers of cable news, not just those who watch Fox,” said Ms. Grossberg.“This is some justice for the American people and for Fox News viewers who’ve been manipulated and lied to for years, all in an attempt to boost the channel’s ratings and revenue,” Ms. Grossberg said.

“Today is a partial vindication for Ms. Grossberg, who was a journalist before she joined Fox News, and is now again after she was fired in retaliation for speaking the truth about the unlawful treatment she suffered there as a woman and a ‘represented’ witness under oath. It tells us that -- notwithstanding Fox News’s public posturing -- it knows that its participation in perpetrating the Big Lie that turned into the Big Grift was wrong as regards it’s own audience and the American People at large. It also indicates an unexpected, but welcome, expression of contrition towards Ms. Grossberg that we welcome and put in the category of ‘institutional change’ that we require to move us closer towards an amicable resolution of Ms. Grossberg’s lawsuits. We have duly noted that movement and thank Fox News for it,” Gerry Filippatos, Ms. Grossberg’s lead attorney, said.

Why were cable news hosts Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon ousted?

Monday 24 April 2023 19:30 , Graig Graziosi

Two media industry bombshells went off within minutes of each other on Monday 24 April, with two of the biggest names in the cable news business abruptly leaving their respective perches.

At Fox News, the conservative culture warrior Tucker Carlson is out after dominating the channel’s primetime lineup for more than a half decade. And at CNN, morning host Don Lemon’s tenure came to a sudden end despite his years as the face of the network’s New Year’s Eve celebration coverage.

Altogether it was a shocking day of shakeups for the news business, compounded by the news late last week that Pulitzer-winning newsroom BuzzFeed News was being shuttered by its owners.
