Judge Aileen Cannon has set a date for the trial in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump.

The Trump-appointed judge has signed a court order listing the trial as starting on 14 August of this year in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden has reached a plea deal with the Justice Department over three federal charges.

The news comes the morning after the former president denied that he ever possessed a secret document about attacking Iran despite the fact a recording exists that had him discussing a document he kept from his presidency.

Mr Trump spoke in an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier at his property in Bedminster, New Jersey less than a week after he pleaded not guilty to 37 charges in a federal court in Miami at his arraignment.

A federal grand jury had indicted him for allegedly willfully mishandling classified documents, obstruction of justice and making false statements.

The former president was also confronted by Baier over his insistence that he won the 2020 election — which he did not, as the Fox News host made clear in a testy exchange.

Fox News has continued to cement its latest falling out with former president Donald Trump, with one longtime analyst saying he was “incoherent” in an interview with host Bret Baier.

Brit Hume, discussing the interview with his colleague Baier on Monday, dismissed the former president’s legal arguments over accusations of mishandling classified documents and suggested they would not hold up in a court of law.

“I will say a couple of things, one thing is his answer on the matters of the law seem to me to verge on incoherent,” Hume said.

Ever since former president Donald Trump announced his indictment two weeks ago, most Republicans have crowed about a supposedly two-tiered system of justice that held the former president and GOP frontrunner to a different standard than President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

This thesis led House Republicans to create a special subcommittee on “weaponisation” of the federal government that came after the multiple probes into Mr Trump’s misconduct. To Republicans, the contrast showed how the so-called “deep state” specifically targeted conservatives while someone like Mr Biden was allowed to walk free.

But the news on Tuesday that Hunter Biden would plead guilty to two charges of failing to pay taxes, and would enter a pretrial diversion agreement for a charge related to the unlawful possession of a firearm, seemed to scramble the argument Republicans have made.

Former president Donald Trump denied that he ever possessed a secret document about attacking Iran despite the fact a recording exists that had him discussing a document he kept from his presidency.

Mr Trump spoke in an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier at his property in Bedminster, New Jersey less than a week after he pleaded not guilty to 37 charges in a federal court in Miami for his arraignment in Miami. A federal grand jury had indicted him for allegedly willfully mishandling of classified documents, obstruction of justice and making false statements.

Late last month, CNN reported that federal prosecutors had obtained audio of a recording in the summer of 2021 where Mr Trump acknowledged that he had held onto a classified document from the Pentagon detailing a potential attack on Iran.

But Mr Trump denied there was a document.

Criminal defendants are routinely advised to avoid commenting on pending charges against them. But Donald Trump, the former president and current White House hopeful, is no ordinary defendant.

In his first televised interview since his arraignment last week on federal charges, the former president acknowledged that he delayed turning over boxes of documents despite being asked to do so, drew factually incorrect parallels between his case and classified document probes concerning other politicians, and claimed he didn’t actually have a Pentagon attack plan that the indictment says he boasted about to others.

Those comments — like any remarks made by a defendant about an ongoing case — could complicate his lawyers’ work, potentially precluding defenses they might have otherwise wanted to make or alternately boxing them into certain arguments so as to remain consistent with their clients’ claims. The interview could give the Justice Department compelling, and admissible, insight into Trump’s state of mind as the case moves forward, allowing prosecutors to preemptively attack defenses he might intend to invoke.

Following Monday night’s Fox News interview with Donald Trump, former New Jersey governor and federal prosecutor Chris Christie spoke to CBS Mornings about what the former president had to say.

Mr Christie noted that Mr discussing the 37-criminal-count indictment against him on television was a “horrible political and legal strategy”.

“Last night he said the reason he didn’t give the documents back was because he’s just so very busy and he didn’t have time to respond to a grand jury subpoena because he needed to get his golf shirts and pants out of the box. I mean, does anybody in America believe this?” Mr Christie said.

He continued: “Look, I think the problem is going to be for him over time is that people are just not going to buy it. And when you think about how many days of golf he’s played since he left office, maybe he could have skipped a couple of rounds of golf and gone through the boxes to respond to a subpoena from a grand jury.”

Mr Christie added: “Look, the problem for Donald Trump in all of this is his own conduct. He’s his own worst enemy. None of this would have happened to him or to the country if he had just returned the documents.”

The former governor zeroed in on the most damning moment for Mr Trump, saying: “So, look, I think he knows he’s in trouble. And last night, I think the worst moment for him was talking about the fact that he just didn’t have time to go through these boxes. Well, in response to the grand jury subpoena, yet he told the government and had his lawyer certify that he had returned all of the documents that were responsive to the subpoena. That is obstruction of justice. And it appears to me last night as a former prosecutor, that he had he admitted obstruction of justice on the air last night to Bret Baier. I can tell you this, his lawyers this morning are jumping out of whatever window they’re near.”

Tax and Firearm Charges Filed Against Robert Hunter Biden

The United States Attorney for the District of Delaware filed charges today against Robert Hunter Biden (Hunter Biden") of Los Angeles. Hunter Biden has been charged with two misdemeanor tax offenses and a felony firearm offense and has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to the tax offenses and enter into a pre-trial diversion agreement with regard to the firearm charge at a proceeding to be scheduled by the assigned United States District Court judge Accordin’s to the tax Information, Hunter Biden received taxable income in excess of $1,500,000 annually in calendar years 2017 and 2018. Despite owing in excess of $100,000 in federal income taxes each year, he did not pay the income tax due for either year.

According to the firearm Information, from on or about October 12, 2018 through October 23, 2018, Hunter Biden possessed a firearm despite knowing he was an unlawful user of and addicted to a controlled substance.

Hunter Biden is charged with two violations of failure to pay income tax and one violation of unlawful possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison on each of the tax charges and a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on the firearm charge.

Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The first CNN/SRSS poll since Donald Trump was arraigned shows some softening of support for the former president within the Republican Party.

Some 47 per cent of GOP voters say Mr Trump is their first choice, dropping six percentage points in a month, down from 53 per cent in May.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holds steady in second place at 26 per cent, former Vice President Mike Pence is at 9 per cent, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley is at 5 per cent, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott is at 4 per cent, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at 3 per cent, and the remaining candidates are at one per cent or less.

Mr Trump’s favourability rating has also dropped from 77 per cent to 67 per cent. The share who say they would not support him for the nomination under any circumstances has climbed, from 16 per cent in May to 23 per cent now.

Former White House photographer Pete Souza has hit out at former president Donald Trump for using one of his images to spread “yet another one of his lies”.

Here’s what Mr Souza had to say:

Shame on Donald Trump for using a photo I made to try and justify yet another one of his lies.⁣

He posted this photo yesterday on Truth Social with the caption, “Biden sitting outside with Lisa Monaco, second in charge of DOJ, probably working on future Plots and Schemes against Republicans.”⁣

This photograph is more than TEN years old. I made this image on May 1, 2013. Joe Biden was then Vice President. Lisa Monaco was then President Obama’s homeland security advisor. ⁣

To give this more context, this photo occurred after the president’s morning intelligence briefing. The VP and Lisa are sitting outside the Outer Oval Office at the edge of the Rose Garden (note that no trees have yet been cut down). President Obama was departing the next day to meet with the President of Mexico. The Boston Marathon bombing had occurred two weeks before.⁣ Donald Trump was then a failed businessman seeking attention by saying President Obama wasn’t a U.S. citizen.⁣We posted this photo on the White House website the next day as our “photo of the day.” We also posted it on the White House Flickr photo stream on June 20, 2013, as one of the photographs in our monthly albums (for May 2013). The original caption: “Vice President Joe Biden talks with Lisa Monaco, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, in the Rose Garden of the White House, May 1, 2013.” ⁣⁣I used a Canon 5DM3 camera, with a 24-70mm lens, with exposure of 1/320 at f/5.6 at ISO 200.⁣ The original file was transferred to the National Archives on 1/20/2017.⁣Thanks to all those on Twitter who brought this to my attention last night. The Department of Justice says the Hunter Biden probe “is ongoing” according to David Weiss, the US attorney who is leading the investigation, CNN reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, Hunter Biden’s lawyer Christopher Clark said it was his “understanding” that the Justice Department probe was “resolved”.

Donald Trump said on Monday night that the days of his family serving in the White House are over if he wins another term in office in the 2024 election.

The former president made the remarks in an extensive interview with Bret Baier of Fox News that was taped at his Bedminster summer home on his golf course in New Jersey.

“I said, ‘That’s enough for the family,’” he said when asked about the prospects of a second term. “It’s too painful for the family. My family has been through hell.”

Former president Donald Trump reacted angrily on Monday after Fox News highlighted a Quinnipiac University poll showing him as trailing President Joe Biden by a four-point margin.

Mr Trump wrote on his Truth Social website that the respected polling organisation had released a “bad poll” and accused Quinnipiac of using too few Republican voters in the sample of Americans who were surveyed. Mr Trump argued that the poll actually showed that he was in the lead over Mr Biden.

Republicans were unimpressed and fumed at the Department of Justice on Tuesday after the agency announced that President Joe Biden’s son Hunter would be charged with firearm and tax offences.
