Trump attacks divide Republican debate crowd as Haley, Pence and Christie lambast Ramaswamy - live updates
Eight Republican candidates for the party’s nominee in the 2024 election battled it out on stage at the first debate of their presidential campaigns.
With the notable absence of Donald Trump hanging over proceedings, the event, hosted by Fox News and moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, nevertheless went ahead.
In an act of counter-programming, Mr Trump instead sat for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson airing on X at the same time.
Running in second place to the former president, many assumed that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would draw fire in the absence of the frontrunner. Instead, that role fell to his apparent surrogate entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy who even referred to Trump as the greatest president ever.
There were heated confrontations between him and former president Mike Pence, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, over his lack of political and foreign policy experience.
Out of the eight candidates, Mr Christie, Ms Haley, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson were the only candidates to directly attack former president Trump. There was broad consensus that Mr Pence had acted correctly on January 6 in defending The Constitution.

Sarah Palin has claimed that Donald Trump’s arrest will lead to civil war in America.
The former Alaska governor spoke to Eric Bolling on Thursday night after Mr Trump surrendered for arrest in Fulton County.
She addressed “those who are conducting this travesty and creating this two-tier system of justice,” questioning if they were trying to start a civil war.
“I want to ask them: What the heck?” she said.
“Do you want us to be in civil war? Because that’s what’s going to happen. We’re not going to keep putting up with this.”
She added to Mr Bolling: “I like that you suggested that we need to get angry. We do need to rise up and take our country back.”

Despite looming over GOP debate, Trump wasn’t mentioned for first hour
13:15 , Oliver O'Connell
Fox News Channel’s two-hour Republican presidential debate was halfway through when moderator Bret Baier said he wanted to take a brief moment to talk about “the elephant not in the room” — Donald Trump and his four criminal indictments.
Up until that point the former president, who skipped the debate and has a large lead in polls for the 2024 GOP nomination, had hardly been mentioned by his eight rivals on a Milwaukee stage on Wednesday.
The reluctance to talk about the topic was evident, but the 10 minutes when it was discussed included some of the debate’s more electric moments.

Donald Trump has already started selling t shirts with his mugshot on just hours after his arrest in Georgia for running a mob-style criminal enterprise with the aim of overturning the 2020 presidential election.
The former president surrendered to Fulton County authorities on Thursday evening to face 13 charges in the sweeping RICO indictment.
He was booked into Fulton County Jail where he was fingerprinted and had his mugshot taken – marking a historic moment as the first current or former president to ever be captured in a booking photo.
Predictably, almost as soon as the scowling mugshot was released, the former president’s re-election campaign began using it to try to fundraise for his 2024 presidential run.
Less than 90 minutes in from his release from the Atlanta jail, the campaign sent an email to supporters saying it would give away a “free” premium cotton t-shirt featuring the historic booking photo – in exchange for a $47 donation.

Top 5 takeaways from contentious first GOP primary debate
08:15 , John Bowden
The first Republican debate of 2023 was a brawl, as expected, but the absence of the party’s frontrunner left the remaining contenders picking targets almost at random.
And while the party will likely insist otherwise at next year’s Republican national convention, the GOP appears to be bitterly divided on a number of key issues — issues that are, for the most part, settled arguments for their counterparts on the left.
Tonight’s showdown in Wisconsin was a Trump-free event where the former president nevertheless cast a long shadow despite not actually being physically present. From questions specifically about the former president to a brash, combative performance from a businessman and political newcomer (sound familiar?), the first matchup of the 2024 Republican field was as much of a spectacle as reporters expected and for which Democrats were possibly hoping.
Let’s break down what we learned tonight:
Five takeaways from contentious first GOP primary debate

Former president Donald Trump proclaimed his innocence Thursday evening after being booked at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia on racketeering charges.

The now twice-impeached, four-times-indicted Mr Trump called his arrest a sad day for the country.

Trump names McMaster, Noem, Ramaswamy as possible Veep picks in post-arrest Newsmax interview
07:03 , Maroosha Muzaffar
After a dramatic day at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Donald Trump, in a post-arrest interview, mentioned Henry McMaster, Kristi Noem and Vivek Ramaswamy as possible Veep picks.
In an interview with Newsmax, the former president was asked a question about whether he saw a possible vice president on stage at the GOP debate. “I thought Vivek, as you say, Vivek, like cake, did very well,” Mr Trump said.
Mr Trump is travelling to South Dakota next month for the Republican Party’s “Monumental Leaders Rally”. Local media reported that sources believe that the South Dakota governor, Ms Kristi has developed close ties with Mr Trump and the friendship could lead to a running mate nomination.
Despite the former president’s being indicted on four new felony charges on 1 August in relation to attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster continued support for Trump’s presidential candidacy in 2024.
“I think that the prosecutor’s [special counsel Jack Smith] out of line. He’s been described as one that stretches the law, and perhaps the facts,” Mr McMaster told reporters.
“But reading about it, and reading those portions [of the indictment] that I have, I just do not see the substance. I don’t think the law fits; I don’t think the facts fit. This is a campaign against Donald Trump.”
