Joe Sorbanelli started the New Jersey Achilles chapter in 2018. He saw all the yellow Achilles shirts when he was running the New York City marathon in 2015. He was inspired to hear their mission of bringing hope, possibility and joy. He joined the New York chapter and soon stared growing a bond with the athletes. Some athletes were from the Garden State and wished they had an Achilles branch closer to home.

Sorbanelli applied for a chapter and soon he and two others were running together in local parks. More and more people noticed their bright green Achilles shirts and in a matter of time there was continual increase in membership. A group of about 40 guides and athletes in 2019 grew to about 500 members today.

The group holds runs in Saddle River Park in Saddle Brook where they meet every Sunday at 8 a.m. and during the spring and summer on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Sorbanelli says all are welcomed as an athlete or guide.

In January of this year they started started workouts in Jersey City and they will expand to running in Cranford beginning in January.

Achilles New Jersey participates in a number of marathons each year. Recently they have ran in the New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and even Chicago marathons.

Steve Weiss is the father of a New Jersey Achilles athlete. Weiss says his son is at his "happiest when he is running with his fellow athletes and guides." Weiss loves to run with his son as they have ran the Philadelphia and New York marathons this past year and will be running Boston in 2024. Weiss looks up to his child as a "true inspiration."

Eli Shkarofsky and Refael Boyer are new members to Achilles International. Shakarofsky pushes Boyer in a racing chair when they run together. There has been moments where the guide feels tired during a long grueling marathon, but his partner urges him to keep going forward. "Don't give up" Boyer tells Shakarofsky in one of their marathons. They have ran half marathons all through the country together including Miami, Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
