“It is beyond surreal to me that FOX wouldn’t pay Aikman, break up his 20 year partnership with Joe Buck and let him go ESPN,” said SI writer Jimmy Traina. “If FOX can pay Skip [expletive] Bayless $5 million a year to get 100,000 viewers, they can pay the lead NFL analyst $15-18 million.”

“Since 2018, ESPN has tried four different analysts on ‘Monday Night Football.’ It failed to find one it liked. So ESPN’s bid helped Romo get a record salary,” The Ringer pointed out. “Then, by signing Troy Aikman for $18 million per year, ESPN beat the record its own failure had helped to create.”

“If I were making a ‘how we got here’ timeline with Troy Aikman, I would include all of the following: Fox trying to hire Peyton Manning for Thursday Night Football in 2018. Tony Romo‘s great early reviews. Tony Romo making $18 million a year,” remarked Bryan Curtis.
