Trinity Cannon's two home runs vs. Texas lead Aggies to Game 1 win in Austin Super Regional

The bubbles are blowing above the Texas A&M softball dugout at Red & Charline McCombs Field, and the Aggies have Trinity Cannon to thank for it.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Aggies senior infielder provided what proved to be a Game 1 dagger in the Austin Super Regional, as the Forney, Texas, native launched a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to put No. 16 Texas A&M up 5-0 over the top-seeded Texas Longhorns.

As noted by the ESPN broadcast, it was the second time in Cannon's career she hit two or more home runs in a single game. The previous time Cannon did so came against the University of Texas-Arlington on Feb. 11, 2022.

While Cannon's second home run of the night lengthened the Aggies' lead to 5-0 — which lengthened again to 6-0 after a Kramer Eschete RBI double in the top of the sixth — it was her first home run that set the tone for the team, looking to make it back to the Women's College World Series for the first time since 2017.

Cannon's first home run came as part of a big first inning for the Aggies. After Kennedy Powell and Koko Wooley got on base with a single and double, respectively, Cannon took Texsa starter Citlaly Gutierrez deep for a three-run home run to put Texas A&M up 3-0.

Each of Cannon's home runs proved pivotal in what ultimately was a 6-5 victory over the No. 1 national seed. Texas' Victoria Hunter put the Longhorns back within striking distance with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 6-4. Then, national player of the year finalist Reese Atwood scored a two-out solo home run to bring the score 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh before Texas A&M ultimately pulled it out.

Heading into Friday's Game 1 of the Austin Super Regional, Cannon was hitting just .154 in the NCAA Tournament. With both home runs on Friday, Cannon now leads the Aggies with 17 home runs.
