Like many, I learned of the viral Lovesac Sactional on my TikTok feed. I scrolled through video after video of apartment dwellers assembling and rearranging their modular sofas and took it as a sign I needed one for myself. And as someone who lives in a small New York City apartment, its modular design was a game changer.

Our experts within the Good Housekeeping Institute also have the data to back it up. They surveyed more than 30 Lovesac owners for their opinions on everything from the ordering process to how well the sofa held up. Ultimately, GH pros declared it the best modular couch — and I fully agree. Since owning my Sactional for nearly a year, I'm as equally impressed by its quality, comfort and storage as the day I bought it.

Still, a couch can be a lofty spend (upward of a couple thousand dollars). So, to help you weigh the pros and cons, we laid out everything you need to know about the Lovesac Sactional, ahead.

What is a Lovesac Sactional?

Twenty-five years ago, Lovesac debuted its namesake beanbag chairs. It has since expanded its lineup with the hit modular sofa, the Sactional. Lauded as "the world's most adaptable couch," the Sactional features reconfigurable seats and sides. Plus, the couch covers require minimal maintenance since the interchangeable covers can be removed and machine-washed.

Few modular sofas on the market offer the versatility of the Sactional; each component can be purchased individually to expand or adapt your configuration. I started with a boucle loveseat. It can be built up to a three-seater thanks to its sectional add-on, expanded to a family-sized sofa or split up into two smaller chaises (and on and on).

Are Lovesac Sactionals pet-friendly and kid-friendly?

That's right! "Lovesac Sactionals are great for families with pets and kids because of the removable and machine-washable covers," according to Lexie Sachs, an executive director within the GH Institute. "Plus, the configurations can be made to be family-friendly; everyone can hang out on the sofa together with a larger set-up."

We recommend opting for upholstery options the brand has labeled as "family-friendly" or "pet-friendly" because they'll hold up best to heavy traffic and more frequent washing. (Its chenille, cross weave, brushed weave and corded velvet are listed as such!) A Lovesace owner we surveyed said: "There are so many positives about this furniture: Easy to clean. I can rearrange it. And, I can move different parts to different rooms as needed."

Ordering and Customization

How much does a Lovesac Sactional cost?

That varies depending on the configuration and customization. Small configurations start around $2,700, while large, family-sized configurations with all the bells and whistles cost closer to $10,000. My three-seat, four-side configuration cost about $4,000 because of the storage seating and angled sides I selected.

While Lovesac isn't the most affordable sofa brand on the market, the add-as-you-go nature of the Sactional's design can help keep costs down in the long run. Instead of investing in a new couch when you move or your design tastes change, you can add on or modify.

What upholstery options are available?

Lovesac offers dozens of upholstery options, ranging from trendy boucle to rich velvet to luxurious leather. "Most of Lovesac's fabrics are synthetic, which may not be as luxurious as other sofa brands that offer fabrics like cotton weaves and linens, but they are certainly more durable," says Sachs.

"Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference; if you want something plush and cozy, you can opt for a boucle or velvet," she adds. "If you want something that looks more like a natural fabric, opt for the brushed weave or cross weave." A bit indecisive? Shoppers can order up to five free upholstery fabric swatches to find the right one.

What customization options are available?

The customization options don't stop at the configuration and upholstery. You can also select the fill type and arm style and add accessories like storage seats, hidden speakers, charging ports, coffee tables and cup holders. While these customizations will increase the price of your Lovesac, there's the benefit of tailoring it to your exact space and needs.

For example, I made every seat a storage seat because of my compact living space. There's enough space inside my three-seater to stash spare linens, winter coats and at-home workout equipment — all with easy access.

Delivery and Assembly

What was the delivery process? How long did it take to arrive?

Shipping takes a few weeks — but it's free! Lead times depend on the upholstery option you select. While fabrics labeled "Quick Ship" will ship within two weeks, custom Sactionals can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to arrive.

Each component of the modular sofa arrives individually, which can be a bit overwhelming for larger styles with dozens of pieces. Also, every last cushion insert, machine-washable cover and sofa accessory came in its cardboard box, so there is a lot of waste.

The hardest part of assembling my Lovesac Sactional was hauling the large, heavy boxes up the stairs to my third-floor walk-up apartment. Those with sides and seats weigh between 40 to 60 pounds, so be prepared to work up a sweat. My biggest tip: Request that the delivery team drops it as close to where you want to build it as possible.

How long does it take to assemble a Lovesac? How many people do you need?

Numerous Lovesac owners we polled agreed that assembling your Lovesac Sactional is a timely and "labor-intensive" endeavor that takes two to three people to assemble. Set-up requires much reading and heavy lifting, but it gets easier once you understand how the different modular components go together.

"We struggled at first to set it up, but then watched some YouTube videos, and now we have taken it apart for cleaning and reassembled [it] several times. It's very seamless now that we've done it," said another Lovesac owner we surveyed.

Performance

Are Lovesac Sactionals comfortable to sit on?

The couch is incredibly comfy, and the standard filling option I chose hasn't gotten lumpy or sagged in the slightest. The flat, rectangular seat backs don't provide much lumbar support, but it's nothing a throw pillow or two can't fix.

Though I loved the design of the angled sides I selected, it doesn't add much comfort-wise and thus, it isn't a customization option I'd pay extra for if I chose again. The brand also touts a LoveSoft fill option (which features synthetic fiber atop a foam-filled chamber) that reportedly helps keep its lofty shape.

How durable are Lovesac Sactionals?

I'm the type who lives on their sofa — I eat, work from home, take naps and, most certainly, kick my feet up. That said, the white brushed-weave upholstery has held up well over the year I've had my Sactional. After a trip through the washing machine, the fabric looks almost new.

Overall, the Lovesac owners we surveyed were impressed by the performance and durability of their Sactional. "Usually, sofas I’ve purchased before will start to show issues after one year because I have three kids, two dogs and a husband. This sofa has held up really well after two years. It still looks new," shared one respondent.

Are Lovesacs comfortable to sleep on?

Yes! I have dozed off on it many times myself and can confirm. All my guests sleep on my Lovesac sofa because I don't have a spare bedroom. Everyone has commented on how comfortably they sleep. The seat cushions have a flat, rectangular shape that feels supportive without being too firm. Meanwhile, the side pillows are about the same size and shape as standard bed pillows.

Are Lovesac Sactionals easy to clean?

One of its key selling points for me was the interchangeable, machine-washable covers. I'd wanted a white sofa for years but feared the color would look dirty. Knowing I could freshen the covers up in the washing machine — or swap them for something entirely different — made me feel more confident selecting light-colored upholstery fabric.

"It is expensive but so worth it," one Lovesac Sactional owner told us. "My husband has spilled two glasses of red wine on the sofa in the past five years, and I just zip off the cover, spray it and wash it. There is no stain."

Taking off all the covers for a deep clean is a hassle because you'll need to disassemble and reassemble the entire sofa. It's easier to remove the seat and back cushion covers that get the most use and, therefore, get dirty the fastest.

"You can aim to wash them once or twice a year, or as needed if there's a spill. You can also spot-clean them in between machine washing, just as you would a regular sofa," Sachs says.

Is a Lovesac Sactional worth it?

We vote: Yes! Lovesac Sactionals earned rave reviews across the board, including myself and more than 30 owners. "Most modular sofas have limited configurations, but the Sactional is truly customizable and can be rearranged over time," Sachs adds.

Lovesac's endless customization options make the Sactional our pick for the best modular sofa. It's an excellent choice for apartment dwellers and expanding families because of how easy it is to add new components to your configuration and rearrange those you already have. We also love the removable, machine-washable cushion covers that make Lovesac sofas easy to clean, especially in households with kids and pets.

Caveats? The Lovesac Sactional is expensive, and most owners agree it's difficult to assemble. But after using mine for a year, I've found its quality and adaptability are worth the financial investment and physical labor. The seats are still just as comfortable, and the structure is just as sound as when I built it. When stains and spills inevitably happen, the upholstery fabric looks good as new after a trip through the wash.
