Two things no one leaves home without these days? A face mask and hand sanitizer. They’re the new on-the-go essentials for everyone.

While the options for face masks feel endless, most hand sanitizers are kind of all the same — clear plastic packaging, germ-killing, but moisture-zapping formula, same ol, same ol.

Beautycounter makes effective beauty products that use clean ingredients, and this new hand serum is no different. It’s made with 60% organic sugar-derived alcohol to kill 99.99% of bacteria and meets the current CDC guidelines.

It doesn’t just kill germs, though. Beautycounter’s hand serum includes ingredients like Niacinamide, Grape Seed Oil and Sweet Almond Oil too, so it nourishes the skin on your hands. And right now, that’s super important. After months of diligent hand washing and using lots of drying hand sanitizers, your hands definitely need some TLC. This hand serum has been clinically proven to both brighten the skin on your hands and make your hands feel softer.

My Beautycounter Hand Serum Review

Full disclosure, I hate using hand sanitizer. Whenever I have the option to wash my hands with soap and water, that’s the route I choose because I just find hand sanitizer to be so unpleasant. It’s drying and usually smells too strong — I just don’t like it.

With that said, I still decided to put Beautycounter’s hand serum to the test. The brand already makes a few products I love, so I said why not? I put it on my desk to quickly clean my hands after receiving a package or touching my outside doorknob, and after a few days of using it, I actually really like it. It’s definitely way better than any traditional hand sanitizer I’ve ever used. It doesn’t dry out my hands and it has a nice, citrusy scent that I like.

As a skin care product, I was actually pretty surprised that this hand serum really did make the skin on the top of my hands look brighter and feel smoother. Even after the first use, I noticed a difference.

The one thing I didn’t love about Beautycounter’s hand serum is that it does feel a bit sticky or tacky when it first starts to dry. The feeling does go away after a few minutes, but it definitely takes time to fully dry off your hands.

I will also add that while I like the mandarin scent of the hand serum, it isn’t necessarily subtle. If you’re sensitive to strong smells, especially citrus ones, this will not be your favorite.

Lastly, I love how elegant Beautycounter’s packaging is, but if I’m thinking about using this hand serum as an actual hand sanitizer when I’m out and about, it is a bit heavy. Also, it doesn’t come with a cap or lid, so I would be a little nervous about the twist top unlocking and leaking in my bag.

The Takeaway

First things first, major props to Beautycounter for creating a hand serum that’s also a hand sanitizer. Two-for-one products are always welcome, and this one couldn’t have come at a better time. The Beautycounter Hand Savior Radiance Boosting Serum + Hand Sanitizer is $32, which is definitely expensive for a hand sanitizer. But when you remember that this product is also skin care and will keep your hands looking and feeling good, I think it’s worth it. Plus, all you need is one pump to cover both hands, so it will last a while.
