These new Triangle breweries for 2023 keep the hoppin’ beer scene booming

North Carolina continues to be a beer lover’s paradise, with top breweries pouring world class creations that tap into the country’s latest beer trends.

That beer boom doesn’t appear to be slowing down, with a handful of exciting new brewery and taproom openings so far in 2023 and even more on the way.

Here are the latest additions to the Triangle’s beer scene.

Edit Beer Company

1911 Sego Court, Suite 101, Raleigh. 919-307-8336 or editbeer.com

This new North Raleigh brewery appeals to us with a few nods to writing and photography in its beer names — like “Depth of Field” a dark style lager, and “Past Present Future,” a west coast IPA. Edit opened its doors right next to Scooter’s Bar & Grill, which serves as the de facto kitchen for the brewery. The brewery is owned by Angela and Brian Johnson, who previously worked at the popular Raleigh bottle shop HopYard. Edit specializes in light and crispy lagers and hoppy IPAs, led by head brewer Jack Deharpport, formerly of R&D Brewing in Raleigh.

New Anthem Beer Project

500 N. West St., Raleigh. 919-594-1261 or newanthembeer.com/location/glenwood-annex

One of North Carolina’s best new breweries launched a new Raleigh taproom as part of the Smoky Hollow development. Born in Wilmington, New Anthem is known among hop fans for putting out some excellent IPAs and has built a reputation as a great spot to catch live music. Owner Aaron Skiles plans to make live music part of the new Raleigh spot as well.

Blackbird Brewery

3608 Rogers Branch Road, Suite 101, Wake Forest. 919-637-5632 or blackbirdbeer.com

There’s a new brewery in Wake Forest. From married couple Ian and Harmony VanGundy, Blackbird opened in the new Wheat Field shopping center with a new taproom and small craft brewery. The gleaming stainless steel tanks are steps away from the draft lines, but Blackbird is far from the industrial chic space we’ve grown accustomed to with breweries. Look for trendy lighting and giant roll-up garage doors opening out onto a corner patio. Blackbird brews all the major styles, offering multiple lagers and IPAs, as well as wheat beers and sours.

Salty Turtle Beer Co.

13100 Falls of Neuse Road, Suite 130, Raleigh. 919-263-8880 or saltyturtlebeer.com

This popular Surf City brewery opened a new Triangle taproom this year in North Raleigh. Situated in the Wakefield Crossings shopping center, the new beer bar offers 14 taps, including crispy drafts that might make you feel like the beach isn’t so far away.

Local Time Brewing

300 S. Main St., Suite 204, Holly Springs. 984-221-8199 or localtimebrewing.com

This new brewery in downtown Holly Springs is owned by Chris and Kelly Gallagher, with longtime Triangle brewer Devin Singley as brewmaster. The doors opened in April on the 100-person taproom and brewery and so far the beers have focused on tried and true versions of classic European lagers and American-style IPAs.

Havoc Brewing Company

39 West St., Pittsboro. 919-726-2088 or havocbrewing.com

Located in downtown Pittsboro, Havoc is Chatham County’s newest brewery. Owned by military veterans Michael Pipkin and Troy Benton, Havoc has a dozen beers and guest ciders on tap, including the brewery’s Mexican lager, hazy, west coast and double IPAs, and a creamy stout on nitro.

Lonerider Spirits and Taproom

708 Ramseur St., Durham. loneriderspirits.com

Lonerider might be the Triangle’s fastest growing brewery, with multiple taprooms and now a spirits tasting room. The popular Raleigh brewery has been making a solid line of whiskeys for a few years now and this spring opened a new tasting room in Durham. The Lonerider Spirits bar opened on Ramseur Street in Durham, directly across the street from Ponysaurus. The bar features Lonerider’s lineup of whiskey aged in a variety of barrels, as well as its beers on tap.

A top Raleigh brewery is building a new giant taproom. Here’s where to find it.
