Trevor Lawrence is entering this year’s NFL draft as one of the most highly-touted quarterback prospects the league has ever seen. And with that distinction comes some pretty massive expectations.

With the weight of the football world on his shoulders, you’d think the projected No. 1 pick would be out to prove himself as the likely Jacksonville Jaguars starer in 2021. But, in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Lawrence made it very clear that wasn’t the case.

The former Clemson Tigers QB doesn’t feel the need to reach anyone else’s expectations.

“It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do and it’s really important to me, but . . . I don’t have this huge chip on my shoulder, that everyone’s out to get me and I’m trying to prove everybody wrong,” Lawrence said, per SI’s Michael Rosenberg. “I just don’t have that. I can’t manufacture that. I don’t want to.”

Looking at his past as a football prospect, this mindset starts to add up. For years, he really hasn’t had anyone to prove wrong.

Coming out of high school in Cartersville, Georgia, Lawrence was the consensus No. 1 player in the 2018 recruiting class. Now, after three incredible collegiate years at Clemson, he’s far-and-away the No. 1 prospect heading into the draft.

Lawrence acknowledges his comments could portray a lack of competitive nature to some people, but he firmly believes his future NFL career is about more than reaching the lofty expectations set in front of him.

“I think people mistake that for being a competitor,” Lawrence said of trying to prove critics wrong. “I think that’s unhealthy to a certain extent, just always thinking that you’ve got to prove somebody wrong, you’ve got to do more, you’ve got to be better.”

On Apr. 29, Lawrence is set to hear his name called with the No. 1 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
