As a Travel Editor, These Are the 30 Long-Flight Essentials I Won't Go to the Airport Without

I start feeling antsy if I go, like, a month without being on a plane. I am a big proponent of catching both flights and feelings, and I practice what I preach. Luckily, as an editor, I get the opportunity to jet off for work multiple times a year, which—in addition to the fact that (a) my family lives in a different country and (b) I can't say no to a girls' trip—allows me to scratch my travel itch on the reg. That's why I can confidently say that I'm a pro when it comes to plane rides, and I know what products are necessary to make long flights feel a hell of a lot more comfortable.

These days, I have a laundry list of items I must stash in my travel tote before I even *think* about Ubering to the airport. These are tried-and-true products that help me sleep, keep me organized, and ensure I wake up looking and feeling like the best version of myself. I'm talking seat-back gadgets, the coziest of accessories, mid-flight makeover methods, and the travel pillow to end all travel pillows (trust me, I've tried dozens to come to this conclusion). Here's a sneak peek at some of the schtuff:

Intrigued? You should be. If you've got a long flight on the horizon, keep scrolling to get the essentials. Oh, and btw, if you're as wanderlusty as I am (or simply want an excuse to buy some of the below gear), check out our CosmoTrips collection page, where you'll find itineraries for some dreamy destinations and reviews of hotels you'll never want to check out of.

Metro Sling Bag

Stalk my IG and you'll see me wearing this in damn near every travel post. It's the perfect crossbody sling: it stays put, holds way more than you think it does, and has multiple compartments (and even a keyring!) for your passport, boarding pass, hand sanitizer, etc.

Eye Gels (5 Pairs)

There's no easier way to feel like you're living the first-class life (even in economy) than by slapping on a pair of eye gels. I love these caffeine-infused ones from Patchology—they come in single-use pouches, so you can stash a couple in your personal item, and leave lookin' a little more refreshed upon arrival.

Slim Racerback Cropped Tank

I run hot, so I always want to have a bottom layer that I can sleep comfortably in if I get warm on the plane. This tank from Beyond Yoga is my go-to on international flights because it's got a built-in bra that doesn't dig in but still gives the girls some support. The fabric is also buttery soft, like your favorite sleep shirt.

SmartGoggles

If you can't live without your Theragun, prepare to meet the best thing your eyes have ever seen (and felt): Therabody's SmartGoggles. It's basically an eye mask that's so much more than just an eye mask, massaging your eyes and temples and emitting sound and heat to help relieve headaches, reduce heart rate, and get you feeling really, really relaxed. Slipping them on mid-flight is the closest thing you'll ever get to a mile-high spa, trust. The best part? They fold in half and come in a protective carrying case, so they're easy to pack.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.therabody.com%2Fus%2Fen-us%2Feye-massager-smart-goggles.html&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>SmartGoggles</p><p>therabody.com</p><p>$199.00</p><span class="copyright">Therabody</span>

The Luggage Tag and Charm Duo

After what feels like a billion hours in the clouds, you're not gonna want to struggle to figure out what bag is yours on the conveyor belt. This cute 'n' colorful luggage tag will catch your eye in a snap, I promise.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.awaytravel.com%2Faccessories%2Fluggage-tag-charm-duo%3Fcolor%3Dstar_salt_white&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>The Luggage Tag and Charm Duo</p><p>awaytravel.com</p><p>$30.00</p><span class="copyright">Away</span>

Light Versatile Pillow

Will you feel like the silliest of all gooses while wearing this wrap-around head pillow/eye mask combo? Yes, absolutely. But I promise you that I have worn it on every single flight I've taken since receiving it, because it's that good. It basically turns anything you rest your head on into a comfy pillow—seat-back tray, plane window, your partner's bony shoulder, etc.—so you can get a quick nap in anywhere and everywhere.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fostrichpillow.com%2Fproducts%2Flight-versatile-pillow&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Light Versatile Pillow</p><p>ostrichpillow.com</p><p>$45.00</p><span class="copyright">Ostrichpillow</span>

Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag

Some people like to practice skincare in the sky, and I both respect and admire those people. This toiletry bag is a must if you're planning on hitting the plane bathroom for a (quick!) get unready with me sesh. You can hang it from any hook, and it fits So. Much. Stuff.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.calpaktravel.com%2Fproducts%2Fterra-hanging-toiletry-bag%2Fwhite-sands&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag</p><p>calpaktravel.com</p><p>$56.00</p><span class="copyright">Calpak</span>

No Drip Extra-Moisturizing Nasal Pump Mist

This might seem like a random suggestion, but if you've ever taken flight with a cold or stuffy nose...you get it. And if you haven't, basically your ears can have trouble equalizing pressure and your head can feel like it's about to explode (truly one of the most painful experiences of my life). This nasal spray helps relieve congestion in your sinuses so that's less likely to happen if you use it before take off. (Reminder: always consult a doctor before using any over-the-counter medications if you have any concerns!)

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GCJSYG?tag=syn-yahoo-20&ascsubtag=%5Bartid%7C10049.g.60131479%5Bsrc%7Cyahoo-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>No Drip Extra-Moisturizing Nasal Pump Mist</p><p>amazon.com</p><p>$6.96</p><span class="copyright">Amazon</span>

Metro Backpack

A backpack? That's actually chic? Yes, it's possible. (I mean...just look at it.) I take this bag on all flights—both short and long—because it fits a ton, is easy to clean, has the perfect padded pocket for my laptop, and comes with a built-in trolley sleeve so I can slide it over my luggage handle. The front pouch is the most innovative feature, though, IMHO—it clips on and off, so you use it to store essentials and throw the bulk of the bag in the overhead compartment to save underseat space.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmonos.com%2Fproducts%2Fmetro-backpack%3Fvariant%3D32562632687690&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Metro Backpack</p><p>monos.com</p><p>$200.00</p><span class="copyright">Monos</span>

Head In The Clouds Press-On Nails (24 Pieces)

Have several hours to spare? Give yourself a manicure in the sky. I love bringing a pack of press-on nails on the plane and unboarding with a gorge new look. Quickies has so many fun designs (including the cute cloud one you see here, if ya wanna fit the theme) and takes less than 10 minutes to apply. I promise you can make it happen on your tray table.

<p><a href="https://getquickies.com/collections/oval/products/drop004-head-in-the-clouds-24pc-press-on-nail-set" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Head In The Clouds Press-On Nails (24 Pieces)</p><p>getquickies.com</p><p>$23.00</p><span class="copyright">Quickies</span>

Scope Mini Disposable Toothbrushes With Toothpaste and Pick (Pack of 6, 2 Brushes Per Pack)

Let's be real: We could all probably use a lil freshening up when we arrive at our destination after a long flight. These mini disposable toothbrushes are perfect for storing in your carry-on, so you can brush and go in a snap—no water or toothpaste required.

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0131KA7G2?tag=syn-yahoo-20&ascsubtag=%5Bartid%7C10049.g.60131479%5Bsrc%7Cyahoo-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Scope Mini Disposable Toothbrushes With Toothpaste and Pick (Pack of 6, 2 Brushes Per Pack)</p><p>amazon.com</p><p>$14.45</p><span class="copyright">Amazon</span>

Airplane Footrest

If you can't afford a lie-flat seat, first of all, same. Second of all, this adjustable foot hammock, which hooks onto either the headrest in front of you or the seat-back table, is the next best thing. Even a little tootsie elevation goes a long way on a long flight, and this pick is padded for extra comfort. Just be sure to check with the airline before you pull it out—some don't allow them.

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C598W95W?tag=syn-yahoo-20&ascsubtag=%5Bartid%7C10049.g.60131479%5Bsrc%7Cyahoo-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Airplane Footrest </p><p>amazon.com</p><p>$21.99</p><span class="copyright">Amazon</span>

Women's Bamboo Rib-Knit Lounge Pant

In my opinion, the best travel 'fit is one that looks like luxe loungewear, but feels like pajamas. Enter: this set from Cozy Earth, made from a soft and breathable bamboo fabric that won't leave you sweating, no matter how much turbulence you experience. Pair it with white sneaks, a cute ballcap, and a jacket for the ultimate "I've got places to be!" lewk.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcozyearth.com%2Fproducts%2Frib-knit-bamboo-lounge-pant%3Fvariant%3D40339158630580&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Women's Bamboo Rib-Knit Lounge Pant</p><p>$128.00</p><span class="copyright">Cozy Earth</span>

Pure Petroleum Jelly

If I left town without at least one tub of Vaseline...I would simply have to come back. During flights, I slather this all over myself—lips, hands, the skin around my eyes, etc.—to lock in moisture that would otherwise be zapped. Slugging on the go? It's a thing.

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019MXNCFU?tag=syn-yahoo-20&ascsubtag=%5Bartid%7C10049.g.60131479%5Bsrc%7Cyahoo-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Pure Petroleum Jelly </p><p>amazon.com</p><p>$4.45</p><span class="copyright">Amazon</span>

Ultimate Travel, Neck, and Body Pillow

As a side sleeper, this has been my secret weapon for sky-high snoozing for nearly a decade now. It rolls up tight and snaps in place so you can either pack it or attach it to your travel bag, and it takes just a few deep breaths to blow it all the way up. Personally, I like resting it on the plane window (or my fiancé's shoulder, if I get stuck in the middle seat) for even more head support.

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DYDAEK?tag=syn-yahoo-20&ascsubtag=%5Bartid%7C10049.g.60131479%5Bsrc%7Cyahoo-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Ultimate Travel, Neck, and Body Pillow</p><p>amazon.com</p><p>$29.99</p><span class="copyright">Amazon</span>

Side Slot Crossbody and Wristlet Strap

You're already holding a million things at the airport—why not take one thing off your hands? This set from Bandolier comes with two phone straps—one that can hang from your wrist, and one that goes cross-body—as well as a case that has a pouch to hold your most important cards. Forgetting your phone in the seatback pocket? Not gonna happen with this cutie.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bandolierstyle.com%2Fcollections%2Fiphone-15-pro%2Fproducts%2Fannie-side-slot-leather-crossbody-bandolier-set-black-gold%3Fvariant%3D41005109248036&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Side Slot Crossbody and Wristlet Strap</p><p>bandolierstyle.com</p><p>$128.00</p><span class="copyright">Bandolier</span>

Performance Compression Socks

ICYMI, compression socks are good for long flights because they've been shown to increase circulation in your legs and feet, which can help prevent blood clots. Most are...not cute. But these ones from Bombas are.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fshop.bombas.com%2Fproducts%2Fwomens-performance-compression-socks-20-30mmhg%3Fvariant%3Dmidnight-storm%26size%3Dm&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Performance Compression Socks</p><p>bombas.com</p><p>$36.00</p><span class="copyright">Bombas</span>

QuietComfort Ultra Headphones

Do I even need to tell you the importance of a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones when you're trying to sleep on a flight? These from Bose (which yes, come in the cutest neutral colorways) are my recent faves thanks to the plush ear pads, un-freaking-believable sound quality, and straight-up silence like I've never experienced before. Like, my fiancé can be standing a foot away from me screaming about soccer and I truly can't hear a peep when I have them on. Crying babies, meet your match.

Hydration Powder Packets (30 Sticks)

I've tried a lot of hydration powders in my day (headache girlie here 🙋♀️), and LMNT's are my favorite. In addition to helping fuel your trip with a boost of sodium, potassium, and magnesium, they actually taste really f*cking good. Like, actually. The citrus and watermelon flavors are the best, IMHO.

Passaporto Passport Case

Number one thing you don't want to lose while flying internationally: your passport. (Even if it would be lovely to get stuck on vacation.) This adorable metallic passport case is (a) beyond chic, (b) hard to miss/lose, and (c) a must-have for the next time you head to Italy.

Cityverse Women's Sneaker

A good pair of white sneakers will carry you through the airport, on the plane, and off on your journey, pairing well with pretty much any outfit you throw on. These ones from Lululemon contour to your feet and have plenty of cushioning, so you can rest assured you'll stay comfy all trip long.

Airplane Phone Holder

Is there anything more devastating than getting on a flight and realizing there's no seatback entertainment? (Or, even worse, realizing it's broken?) This nifty gadget helps mount your phone to the tray table or seat back in front of you, so you can stay entertained no matter the circumstances.

<p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MYW7C3Z?tag=syn-yahoo-20&ascsubtag=%5Bartid%7C10049.g.60131479%5Bsrc%7Cyahoo-us" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>Airplane Phone Holder</p><p>amazon.com</p><p>$11.99</p><span class="copyright">Amazon</span>

The Travel Blanket

One thing about me: I sleep on planes. But only because I come prepared with the proper equipment. One important piece in my arsenal? This plush-but-breezy travel blanket, which folds up into a pouch for easy carrying. The most important feature, in my opinion, is the foot pocket—for some reason, having your feet wrapped up just makes everything cozier.

<p><a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=74968X1596630&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.awaytravel.com%2Faccessories%2Ftravel-blanket%3Fcolor%3Dblack_green&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cosmopolitan.com%2Flifestyle%2Fg60131479%2Flong-flight-essentials%2F" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Shop Now;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Shop Now</a></p><p>The Travel Blanket</p><p>awaytravel.com</p><p>$95.00</p><span class="copyright">Away</span>

Ever have an airline lose your luggage? If you answered yes, I don't need to explain why this is a necessity. Pop one into your suitcase and feel your anxiety melt away.

Sleep Mask for Side Sleepers

If you hate eye masks because you despise the way they press on your eyeballs...I feel you. Especially as an eyelash extensions addict. This innovative eye mask contours around your eyes, leaving plenty of space for you to blink freely. It's a game-changer for flights or just a regular night of sleep.

They're magnetic, so you can keep them all together, and come with customizable labels, so you'll never forget what's in where.

Don't get me started about how germy planes are. Yes, even post-pandemmy. Luckily, Touchland makes chic hand sanis that smell so good you'll have to stop yourself from spritzing 'em nonstop.

Magnetic Portable Charger
