How to trash or recycle your live Christmas tree in Tarrant County

Fort Worth Star-Telegram file/Star-Telegram

The presents are unwrapped, the relatives are gone, you’ve taken down your decorations, and now it’s time to figure out what to do with your live Christmas tree before it becomes a fire hazard.

Tarrant County residents have several options based on where they live.

Most cities are allowing residents to put their trees on the curb to be collected with recycling or bulk trash. Some are offering municipal collection zones at city halls, municipal dumps or local tree nurseries with an eye towards turning trees into mulch and keeping them out of landfills.

Here’s what’s available where you live.

Fort Worth

Residents can drop off live trees at one of the city’s four collection stations. This is a good option for apartment dwellers who don’t have curbside pickup. The stations are:

  • 2400 Brennan Ave.;

  • 6260 Old Hemphill Road;

  • 301 Hillshire Drive;

  • 5150 Martin Luther King Freeway.

Trees dropped off at the collection stations will be sent for composting instead of being be thrown into the landfill.

Residents in single-family homes can leave their trees on the curb to be picked up with their yard trimmings bin.

The city requires residents to remove all ornaments, lights and other decorations from the tree before disposal.

Artificial trees, wreaths, and garlands can be thrown out with your regular trash.

Arlington

Arlington residents can leave live trees on the curb. If it is taller than six feet, the city would like you to cut it in half to make it easier to haul away.

For a limited time, residents can take their trees to be recycled.
