Trans person attacked with shovel, kicked by 3 people at park near Univ. of California Berkeley: police

A transgender person was attacked by three people at a park near the University of California, Berkeley over the weekend, authorities said. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

According to a UC Berkeley police report, the incident took place at a housing construction site at People’s Park just before 8 a.m. Sunday.

“A total of three individuals assaulted a victim using a shovel and their feet causing injuries,” police said, adding that one suspect was arrested, but two were still at large.

The suspect was identified as a 20-year-old woman living in Antioch, about 36 miles east of Berkeley, local television station KTVU-TV reported, citing university spokesperson Dan Mogulof.

The victim, who hasn’t been named, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

“Based on information gathered during the investigation of this crime, this crime was believed to have been an anti-transgender hate crime,” police said.

According to UCPD, a hate crime is a “criminal offense that manifests evidence that the victim was intentionally selected because of the perpetrator’s bias against the victim.”

Two other crimes were reported in the same area Sunday morning, according to UCPD.

A victim was allegedly attacked with a baseball bat. The victim, who didn’t sustain any visible injuries, walked away while officers were completing the report.

There was also a report of attempted arson, police said. Suspects are still at large.

Anyone with information about any of the three crimes is urged to contact UCPD at (510) 642-6760.

People’s Park has been a symbol of anti-establishment activism since the late ‘60s. The latest round of activity was sparked by a decision by the university to convert an area of the park into a $312 million housing project.
