The Traitors favourite Wilf Webster believes his loss in last year's series was a "saving grace".

Fans of the BBC One gameshow will recall Wilf expertly betraying his co-stars before coming unstuck in the final episode, as Aaron, Hannah and Meryl successfully identified him as the Traitor at the last moment.

Despite missing out on the juicy cash prize, Wilf exclusively explained to Digital Spy why there's no hard feelings.

"After it, I was like, 'What have we just gone through together?' I think I played it exactly how I wanted to play it – I wouldn't change anything," Wilf told us.

"I think getting caught at the end was a saving grace. Kieran's parting gift. I think if I had won it would have been harder for me to have a career after."

As mentioned, fellow Traitor Kieran effectively gave away Wilf's position in a nerve-shredding stand-off around the round table during The Traitors' series one finale – but the pair "still chat" and "go to some events" together to this day.

Elsewhere in our conversation, Wilf opened up about brushing shoulders with Strictly Come Dancing presenter Claudia Winkleman on The Traitors.

"She was really comforting during the times that I struggled. Really comforting. There were parts where I didn't want to do it anymore," he admitted.

"You see it in an episode, where she comes in and asks, 'Why did you do that?' and it was literally like someone stabbing me in the heart when she said that and I just broke down and she was so supportive at that point.

"She was amazing and you can tell she just wants everyone to win. She was really supportive."

The Traitors season 1 and the US version are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now. Season 2 of the UK version premieres tonight (January 3) at 9pm.
