Construction work around a former borrow pit will cause the closure of trails at Marshall Hampton Reserve in Winter Haven, though Panther Point Trail will remain open.

Construction is expected to continue through mid-June, Polk County said in a news release. During that time, the Southwest Florida Water Management District will construct a spillway at the former Hampton Borrow Pit. A spillway conveys water out of the lake during high rainfall events.

The Panther Point Trail runs down the east side of Lake Hancock from the Marshall Hampton Preserve and connects with the Fort Fraser Trail. It's more than five miles one way.
