Oscar and BAFTA-nominated Aftersun actor Paul Mescal and Scream actress Melissa Barrera are teasing fans about their steamy new flick Carmen as a new extended trailer has dropped.

Based on the French composer Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, the pair can be seen dancing up close and getting into some troublesome tight spots as their on-screen romance blossoms.

Barrera is no stranger to a dance role, having played Vanessa in Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, but for Mescal, this role might seem a little different to fans.

Mescal plays Aidan, a retired Marine turned border guard, who falls for Barrera's Carmen, a dancer who makes the dangerous decision to cross the border.

The film is directed by dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed Black Swan, which is where he met his actress wife Natalie Portman.

The new extended trailer gives viewers a whole extra minute to see how the two's chance encounter on the US/Mexico border turns them into outlaws.

Mescal joined the project in 2020, replacing 50 Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan as Aidan.

The first trailer reveals that Carmen's mother has passed, which prompts her to cross the border, as well as clips showing Aidan in street fights with a few flashes of Carmen performing.

The new trailer does all that and a whole lot more.

Not only do fans get to see more high-velocity dance steps, but the trailer starts with a sentimental voiceover about love as Carmen's mother encourages her to fly the nest and go to the "City of Angels".

We see Aidan holding a guitar, showing his love of music, but with him forced to take the only job in the town, as a border guard. A powerful scene follows where he pulls a gun on his colleague when Carmen crosses the border.

A cutaway and gunshot lead us to believe this could be the cause of the two becoming outlaws.

The trailer ends with the young lovers embracing in a passionate kiss.

Carmen is currently scheduled to be released in the US on April 21. The film is yet to have a UK release date.

Scream VI is out now in cinemas.
