Trailer for new Netflix dating series 'Sexy Beasts' goes viral: 'This is the stuff of nightmares'
You've heard of The Masked Singer. Are you ready for The Masked... Dater? That's the basic premise behind the Netflix's new dating series Sexy Beasts, which dropped its first trailer today. Set to premiere on the streaming service on July 21, Sexy Beasts features lovelorn men and women going on blind dates while wearing elaborate prosthetics — ranging from a panda mask to a devil mask — that obscure any glimpse of their actual appearance. "I kiss this girl, and I don't know what she looks like," says one such confused contestant. (Watch the trailer above.)
As stated in the minute-and-a-half long teaser, the reason for the masks is to test out a very specific question: "Could you fall in love with someone based on personality alone?" That query naturally inspires a range of responses from contestants. For example, while a praying mantis-masked man insists "Personality for me is everything," another guy in beaver make-up offers up this less-enlightened take: "Ass first, personality second."
It's worth noting that Netflix didn't dream up this demented idea: Sexy Beasts started its life in 2014 as a British reality series that only lasted a single season. (That version is currently streaming in the U.S. on Tubi.) Equally short-lived German and South Korean versions of the show followed in 2015.
Based on the Twitter reaction, the Netflix's adaptation may have more staying power. The Sexy Beasts trailer instantly went viral as soon as it hit social media, with thousands of baffled viewers delightedly promising to watch the heck out of it.

Sexy Beasts is exactly what non-furries think furries are into.

I truly would love to know the Netflix algorithm that led to Sexy Beasts getting greenlit. Like is there a huge subset of people who alternate binge watching "Love is Blind" and 80s body horror movies? pic.twitter.com/DjLQquW4RN

And some people don't just want to watch Sexy Beasts — they want to be a sexy beast themselves. The "Which animal would you be?" posts were hot and heavy.
