Tradition present in Section V boys lacrosse large school title games: See the matchups

This season's Section V boys lacrosse large school championship games blend plenty of big game experience with teams and players looking to shake up the status quo.

There will be a new champion in Class A this season, as one program on a six-year drought meets another that's never claimed the championship brick. In Class B, two programs with storied histories in boys lacrosse will clash.

The games will take place Tuesday evening at St. John Fisher University. The winners will advance to the NYSPHSAA quarterfinals to face the Section VI representatives on June 1 at Williamsville East.

Here's a look at the matchups:

Section V Class A championship: No. 1 McQuaid (16-2) vs. No. 2 Penfield (12-6)

When: 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at St. John Fisher.

McQuaid's key players: Junior midfielder JP Gianforti, sophomore midfielder Domenic Giangreco, senior attack Vincenzo Giangreco, senior goalie Will Gordon, senior attack John Harding, senior midfielder Eoin Meyer, senior defender Brenton Paladino, junior midfielder AJ Quagrello.

Penfield's key players: Senior attack Ethan Aust, senior defender Ryan Bowerman, sophomore attack Brodie Joyce, senior midfielder Adam Schembri, sophomore goalie Mason Schembri, sophomore defender AJ Theodorakakos.

From McQuaid coach Alex Gray: "(Penfield) is a great team, great coaching staff, great program."

From Penfield coach John Schembri: “Offensively (McQuaid) has a great team speed and will challenge you in transition and subbing situations. The defense pressures out and they have two excellent faceoff midfielders that help them get possessions.”

Nuts and bolts: The teams did not meet during the regular season ... McQuaid is making its second straight Class A final appearance. The Knights fell in last year's championship to Pittsford ... Penfield's six Section V titles rank seventh all time ... McQuaid opened the season 11-0 ... McQuaid is one of two teams in Section V to possess multiple 50-goal scorers (John Harding and Vincenzo Giangreco) ... Penfield's Ethan Aust also eclipsed the 50-goal plateau with five goals in the section semifinal against Fairport.

Section V Class B championship: No. 1 Victor (15-3) vs. No. 2 Irondequoit (15-3)

When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 at St. John Fisher

Victor's key players: Senior attack Jack Herendeen, sophomore defensive midfielder Oliver Kowal, junior defender Simon Kowal, senior defender Cam Ryan, junior midfielder Brody Secker.

Irondequoit's key players: Senior midfielder Jonah Carrier, senior midfielder Oliver Grisdale, junior goalie Sven Habitzreuther, junior defender Taiden Makubire, sophomore attack Cooper Moore, senior defensive midfielder Jordan Nolan.

From Victor coach Dan Stone: "Irondequoit is an excellent team with an incredible history full of tradition and success across Section V, New York state and beyond. They have one of the best faceoff men (Jonah Carrier) in the country who is also an exceptional two-way midfielder, a dynamic attackman, and a cast of talented middies and attackmen who complement each other very well within their offensive system. On the other side of the ball, their defense is technical and physical, and they will confront you every time you handle the ball. Backing the six defenders is one of the top goalies in Section V (Sven Habitzreuther) who stops just about everything, makes very good decisions with the ball and has nerves of steel."

From Irondequoit coach Aaron Bottazzo: “Victor is a high-quality opponent. They have been the gold standard for not only Section V but New York state as well as on the national stage. They are a very talented team, led by a great coaching staff. Victor is good at every level. We will have to play efficiently and really limit our mistakes to run with them. They provide a great competitive challenge for our team.”

Nuts and bolts: Victor won the teams' matchup 8-4 on May 7, Irondequoit has not lost in five games since ... Victor is 9-4 all-time in Section V championship games ... Irondequoit last won a Section V title in 2012 and has made one championship game appearance since, losing in the 2022 Class B final ... Eagles senior Jonah Carrier enters the title game as Section V's leader in faceoff win percentage at 79%.
