Trader Joe's Recalls Organic Basil Sold in 29 States Due to Salmonella Concerns

One person has been hospitalized thus far.

If you’ve shopped at Trader Joe’s for fresh herbs at any point over the past few months, you may want to take a peek at your stash. The California-based retailer recently announced that it is recalling its Infinite Herbs Organic Basil because of salmonella concerns.

The recalled basil, which comes in 2.5-ounce plastic clamshell containers, was sold between February 1, 2024 and April 6, 2024. The Universal Product Code (UPC) is 8 18042 02147 7. It was distributed to Trader Joe’s stores in Washington, D.C. and more than two dozen states. The states impacted by this recall are as follows: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Per the Trader Joe’s website, customers who purchased the Infinite Herbs Organic Basil during the specified date range should discard it immediately, or return it to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) a dozen illnesses across seven states have been reported in relation to this recall. This includes one person who has been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported at this time. Of the 12 people who have become ill, seven of them purchased, or likely purchased, Infinite Herbs Organic Basil from TJ’s. To that end, the CDC notes that Trader Joe’s has pulled this product from stores, and it is no longer available for purchase.

Aside from throwing away any basil that may be contaminated, the CDC is telling concerned shoppers to wash any other items or surfaces that may have come in contact with the contaminated basil using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

As the CDC notes, salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Side effects for those infected with salmonella include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
