Track: Benson hurdle sweep propels Quincy to runner-up finish

COMSTOCK- Not to be outdone by their classmates on the other side of Friday’s Comstock Invitational, the Quincy Oriole boys also took runner-up honors at the event, taking the second-place trophy with a score of 93 points. Lawton took home the win with a score of 126 points while Bangor finished in third place with 80 points.

Bronson also competed on the day, finishing in seventh place with 57 points.

The Quincy second place finish was paced by four total gold medals, including a sweep of the hurdle events by sophomore Clayton Benson who won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.63 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 44.34 seconds. Benson also wrangled himself up a silver medal, taking second place in the high jump behind teammate Noah Rufenacht who won the event with a jump of 5 feet, 11 inches. Benson also cleared 5 feet, 11 inches, however Rufenacht claimed the gold after clearing the height in fewer chances.

Also bringing home a gold medal for Quincy was junior Corey Turner who continued his undefeated ways in the pole vault, winning with a vault of 12 feet, 6 inches. Turner also secured a fourth-place finish in the long jump to help the Oriole effort.

Rounding out the Quincy effort with a top eight effort was Cameron Barry, fifth place in the 200; Noah Pearson, third place in the 400; Micah Groves, fourth place in the 400; the 400 relay team of Turner, Kaleb Handy, Kaden Cutler, and Barry, fifth place; the 800 relay team of Barry, Rufenacht, Groves, and Pearson, fourth place; the 1600 relay team of Groves, Rufenacht, Benson, and Pearson, sixth place; the 3200 relay team of Chayse Jensen, Hudson Gray, Eddie Miller, and Nathan Richer, eighth place; Lincoln Sims, sixth place in the shot put; Hayden Peters, eighth place in the discus; and Kaleb Handy, second place in the pole vault.

The Bronson Vikings finished in seventh place on Friday, thanks in large part to the efforts of Stevie Wilson, Boston Bucklin, and Kam Brackett. Wilson took a pair of runner-up finishes at Comstock, taking second place in the 110 hurdles in a time of 17.55 seconds and second place in the 300 hurdles in a time of 44.77 seconds. Wilson also took fifth place in the long jump with a jump of 17 feet, 8 inches.

Bucklin secured one of the other silvers for Bronson, taking second place in the 800 in a season best time of 2 minutes, 7.58 seconds while Kam Brackett finished in second place in the 400 in a time of 55.40 seconds. Bucklin also took third place in the high jump while Brackett finished in sixth place.

Rounding out the Bronson effort with a top eight finish was Tyler Wilber, fourth place in the 800; Jack Ganton, fourth place in the 3200; and Jace Hoard, seventh place in the shot put.
