Tracee Ellis Ross Shares the Products She Uses to Create Her Go-To Hairstyle at 50

Tracee Ellis Ross recently revealed the details of her everyday hair routine in a new interview.
The 50-year-old actress revealed that her go-to products are the Styling Cream, the Leave-In Conditioner, and the Hair Ties from her own hair and beauty line, Pattern Beauty.
She also shared her favorite hair products for pool days in the summer.
Whether she’s stepping out onto the red carpet or glowing in fresh-faced bikini photos on Instagram, Tracee Ellis Ross is known for her flawless hair. Lucky for us, the 50-year-old actress recently revealed the secrets to her luscious strands—Pattern Beauty’s Styling Cream, Leave-In Conditioner, and Hair Ties.
In a new interview with The Cut, Ross revealed that makeup isn’t a part of her daily beauty routine—but that doing her hair is always a “regular thing” for her. “Usually, I do my best fresh wash and diffuse at night before bed,” she said. “Then I do a slick back bun because I just love the way my face looks with it. I’m 50 years old and it looks so elegant.”
To perfect her “elegant” slicked-back bun, the actress said that she relies on three products from her own hair and beauty line, Pattern Beauty: the Styling Cream, the Leave-In Conditioner, and the Hair Ties. The Styling Cream is formulated with shea butter, cacay oil, and sweet almond oil to help nourish strands and prevent breakage, while the Leave-In Conditioner promises to prevent dry, frizzy hair and hydrate curls with a blend of natural oils and honey.
Ross first founded and launched Pattern Beauty in 2019, as a collection of hair products that are specifically formulated for curly, coiled, textured hair—in fact, the brand just recently celebrated its latest launch, a blow-dryer specifically designed for textured hair. “Most of us in this community have had to become our own experts…we have had to make our own things in our own bathrooms. So to be able to offer a selection of products that work together and support each other is important to me,” Ross told WWD in 2019.
But that’s not all the products that Ross regularly uses from Pattern. The actress also shared with The Cut the products she uses during her summer pool days, revealing that she doesn’t do a lot of shampooing when she’s in the sun—but that when she does, she uses Pattern Beauty’s Hydration Shampoo.
“Mostly it’s for rinsing chlorine. Even if I get a hose or a bottle of water, I rinse the chlorine out of my hair because it’s so drying and just not worth it,” Ross said. “I am fine with salt water in my hair for a little bit; it’s natural and sometimes it actually makes for really sexy beach hair. But I will rinse it out when I get back to my room, and then it’s just all about conditioning.”
When she’s on vacation, though, Ross says that she goes the “intensive route” and relies on Pattern’s Treatment Mask or Transition Mask. And she has several go-to products she always brings to the pool, too: a mini wide-tooth comb, a mini shower brush, as well as a travel-size of leave-in conditioner.
