Town of Elgin near epicenter of recent SC earthquakes planning public meeting on the issue

Elgin is planning a meeting for the public on the recent string of earthquakes that have begun near the town and shaken the Midlands.

The town’s Facebook page states that officials are organizing a town hall meeting at the multipurpose room at Blaney Elementary School for residents and business owners to discuss the recent earthquakes.

“Once we have decided on a date and time, we will notify the public,” the post states. “We are coordinating this event with county and state officials.”

Elgin and parts of South Carolina have been rocked by a wave of earthquakes in recent weeks, the epicenter of which have been near the town, located on the northeastern outskirts of Columbia.

The latest quakes hit the area on Wednesday.

The United States Geological Survey confirmed that a magnitude 3.5 earthquake shook parts of the Midlands just before 3 p.m. Wednesday. The earthquake was centered 3 miles east of Elgin, at 2:43 p.m.

Another quake measuring 3.6 in magnitude was recorded about 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. That quake occurred just under 4 miles east of Elgin.

To date, no damage has been reported.

“Out of concern following today’s (Wednesday) events, we had a SCDOT Inspector come out tonight to make sure there was no structural damage to the bridge on US Hwy 1,” a Wednesday Elgin Facebook post read. “We were just informed that everything looks good and we will continue to monitor it as long as we are experiencing the strong magnitude earthquakes.”
