Tourists 'understand importance' of new cathedral charge
Tourists have largely "responded positively" to a new £14 entry fee at Wells Cathedral, a spokesperson for the venue said.
Religious leaders introduced the charge earlier this month because more money was needed to maintain it.
It currently costs £4,500-a-day to run the Grade 1-listed building.
"People understand the importance of raising the monies," the cathedral spokesperson added.
"Since the introduction of the adult tourist charge there have been many positive responses.
"The monies will be ploughed back into funding worship and mission, care and restoration of the fabric, visitor operations, hospitality and outreach."
The spokesperson added there had "been some negative feedback", but this "was to be expected".
Wells Cathedral is still free to enter for worship, prayer, and to light a candle.
A spokesperson for the cathedral previously said it receives limited funding from the church and government and relies on donations, legacies and grants as well as the income it can generate for itself.
The Venerable Anne Gell, Acting Dean, added: "We need adequate income to ensure that this beautiful cathedral is here for everyone as a beacon of hope and light."
