Top Workplaces: Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine provides welcoming vibe

Elizabeth Schmitt first experienced the welcoming atmosphere at Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine when she took her husband there for an appointment last year. She’d spent a dozen years in the field of neurology and had never encountered anything quite it.

“I thought, this would be a wonderful place to work. It is so bright and cheery. Everybody is smiling. I know that doesn’t sound legit – but it’s true,” recalls Schmitt, who at the time, had taken a break from working. “It is just a very friendly environment. The office is immaculate, and I went home and immediately put in my resume.”

She’s been working at Goodman Campbell as a medical office specialist since November and is already training to be a medical secretary. (Her husband’s surgery went well, he’s able to play golf again, as well as help with household chores, she says.) For her part, Schmitt still gets the same welcoming vibe from the place, too – and now she contributes to it. “Everybody is accommodating,” she says. “It’s just a wonderful place to work.

Employees describe an organization that’s known for treating its people well and say they’re listened to by colleagues and managers at all levels of the company. “The doctors genuinely respect our opinions with management of the patients, says Kelly Hoonhout, an interventional neuroradiology nurse practitioner at Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine. She’s been with the organization since September 2019 and says that she’s been able to get to know other staff since turnover is low.

Hoonhout says her colleagues outside the organization as well as those who work there hold it in high esteem. “I have to say that everybody, including ourselves, agree that we have the dream job,” she says.

Edwin Mendez, a software training specialist at Goodman Campbell, loves the opportunity to work with colleagues face-to-face. He prefers doing in-person work; but he also appreciates the freedom to be able to work from home if needed.

“It’s a great example of a work-life balance. Being able to wake up every morning and not dread going into work – it’s a pretty nice feeling,” says Mendez, whose had other jobs where he felt like he was just trying to get through the day.

Hoonhout adds that employees also enjoy perks ranging from discounts on events in the community, like 5Ks, to swag including company T-shirts, hats and sweatshirts. Hoonhout is partial to a sweatshirt she has with a spine running down the back.
