Ask BAM Companies employees what makes their business different and you’re likely to hear a response centered around culture.

Employees talk about the company’s “incredible’’ culture and how “the culture and the people’’ are the reason they love their job.

The culture at BAM Companies -- a specialist in acquiring and managing institutional-quality apartment complexes – is one of fun, growth, family, and work-life balance. It is a culture that has been developed over time.

Ivan Barratt founded BAM Companies in 2010 with less than five units under management. In the years since, BAM Companies has grown to 4,000 units under management. The firm has transformed into a vertically integrated capital investment, property management and renovation group. It has executed over $1.33 billion in transactions.

The BAM Companies consist of three separate organizations -- BAM Capital, BAM Management and BAM Construction. They employ 155 people in the United States and 83 in Central Indiana.

A year ago, BAM Companies was ranked as a Top Workplaces for the first time. The business repeated this year with high employee job satisfaction evident in the survey.

Employees say they are trusted to do their job, empowered to succeed and make decisions at BAM Companies. Many said they felt valued and treated like family.

The BAM Companies also make efforts to build their work culture. The organization has a minimum of four all-company events each year. Two of those events are based on bringing others as well. These events are opportunities for employees to not only know each other better, but to bond. The BAMFAM and BAMily are the result of the organization’s emphasis on culture.

Because BAM Companies is an organization that owns multi-family housing, it can offer benefits to employees that others cannot. In addition to traditional benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, holidays and a 401K match, BAM Companies can offer non-traditional benefits such as rent discounts, free utilities on site and use of amenities at the property.

In 2023, BAM Companies began a diversity and inclusion committee. The committee’s task is to ensure that the culture meets company standards, and that BAM Companies are marketing themselves as a welcoming place to work.

There is also a philanthropy committee at BAM Companies. The committee’s focus is on the company giving back to the community. BAM Companies has recently partnered formally with Firefly Children and Family Alliance.

The philanthropy, the inclusion – it all goes back to the company’s core values. BAM Companies aims to build a loyal and loving family; when people grow, BAM grows; a fun and quirky spirit and work hard, play hard and win.
