Here's How the Top Super Bowl Snacks Stack Up

Is there anything more American than Super Bowl Sunday and game day eats? More than 4 in 5 people tune into the big game, and nearly 3 in 4 make snacks to enjoy while watching, according to a 2023 survey from the site Bid on Equipment. Additionally, 70 percent of Americans go for appetizers over entrees on Super Bowl Sunday. So what snacks are game day winners? The survey analyzed more than 9,000 Google search terms to find out who is eating what and where. You may be surprised by what's most popular.

#1: Meatballs
Though meatballs may not be the first dish that comes to mind when you think football (wings, anyone?) it is the No. 1 most searched recipe for the Super Bowl. Meatballs were the top choice in Maine, Montana, Vermont, and Wyoming.

#2: Guacamole
This popular party dip made second place. Florida loves it in particular — it was No. 1 for that state.

#3: Chips and Salsa
Whether you like your sauce hot or mild, this party snack ranked third. It was the top Super Bowl food for Arizona, Hawaii, North Carolina, and Texas — maybe it's a warm-weather favorite?
#4: Tater Tots
It's a Midwest type of thing. Both Indiana and Kansas choose tater tots as their most popular Super Bowl food to serve and eat.
#5: Chili
Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri, and Indiana all go for a big bowl of chili while watching the big game. South Carolina also chooses chili first, but only if it's on a hot dog.
#6: Buffalo Wings
Nearly 2 in 5 people surveyed said they were planning to eat buffalo wings on Super Bowl Sunday. But while wings might be considered a classic Super Bowl food, they actually came in sixth place. They're most popular in Illinois, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. In Rhode Island, they prefer them garlic Parmesan-flavored.
#7: Hummus
Nevada and Washington state choose hummus as their Super Bowl go-to. And not surprisingly, Seattle ranked as second healthiest Super Bowl city, based on searches for healthy gamed day recipes such as keto, whole 30, and gluten-free.
#8: Nachos
California loves nachos, as does New Jersey and Massachusetts, all of which rank it as their No. 1 Super Bowl food. Of course, nachos go great with most of the five popular game day dips: queso, salsa, guacamole, buffalo chicken, and ranch.
#9: Pigs in a Blanket
Georgia, Michigan, and Tennessee serve up pigs in a blanket first and foremost as their Super Bowl snack. Ironically, Nashville ranked sixth for healthiest Super Bowl cities, perhaps they are supplementing with a veggie platter?
#10: Spinach Artichoke Dip
Rounding out the top 10 for most popular game day foods is the ubiquitous spinach artichoke dip. However, Louisiana is the only state where this is the most popular app. A number of states prefer queso as dip, such as Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
