Top performances and other things to know about high school hoops from Feb. 13-19

Crunch time has arrived for area Class A and B high school basketball teams.

Girls teams capped their regular season on Friday and have opened postseason play. Boys teams are wrapping up their regular seasons this week and will begin postseason play next week.

Here's some of the big highlights from last Feb. 13-19:

Two 1,000-Point Scorers

Katelyn Schroeder, a 6-foot junior for Hitchcock-Tulare's girls, and Alec Squires, a 6-10 senior for Sioux Valley's boys, each scored their 1,000th career points in games this past week. Squires is a South Dakota State University recruit.

Other Top Performers

There were some other big-time performers in boys basketball including Joey Johnson of Aberdeen Christian, who scored 81 points (22, 27 and 32) in three games, Carvin Fish of Tiospa Zina recorded games of 20 and 22 points, Layne Cotton of Faulkton Area 29 and 30 and Joe Schulte of Milbank 23 and 28. Lane Tietz of Groton Area had 29 points in one game, Garrett Mertens of Milbank 28, Zach Ries of Waverly-South Shore 27 and Tyson Stevenson of Hamlin 25.

In girls basketball, Carley Cotton of Faulkton had games of 25 and 32 points and Katie Rozell of Redfield 24 and 33. Caylin Kelly scored 25 in one game.

Game of the Week

Estelline-Hendricks and Castlewood's girls battled to the wire in a double-overtime game that Estelline-Hendricks won 65-61 on Feb. 15 in Castlewood. Kenzy Beare collected 21 points and six rebounds and Ayla Texley 18 points for the Redhawks. Presley Knecht and Cassidy Kirwan each scored 15 for Castlewood.
