Who are the top HS baseball teams? Providence Journal Week 2 baseball power rankings

Vacation showed us a lot and not so much.

But my prognostication skills are sharp, I know that much. The Division I top three teams are all the same – South Kingstown, Hendricken and Cumberland proved me true. And we have a fourth holdover from the first week in North Kingstown.

Coventry’s walk-off win last week got them on the board and rightfully so.

Division II is begging for more parity at the top with a trio head-and-shoulders above the league. In the state’s second league, Westerly downed Barrington in their matchup of contenders to jump one slot.

And in D-III, Exeter-West Greenwich made waves after a standout performance by Kole Kilduff.

Providence Journal High School Baseball Power Rankings

Division I

1. South Kingstown (7-0)

Last week I said South Kingstown could enter its match against Hendricken undefeated and so far, the Rebels have held up their end of the bargain. SK breezed through vacation and holds onto its top rankings for another week as they host the Hawks on Tuesday at Old Mountain Field. First pitch is at 4:15 p.m.

2. Hendricken (6-0)

Hendricken escaped La Salle with a seven-run sixth inning for a 9-6 win on Thursday. Frank Tillinghast’s double to the left corner put Hendricken ahead and kept the Hawks perfect against in-state teams. Hendricken also shutout Pilgrim and toppled Smithfield last week.

3. Cumberland (5-0)

The top trio stays the same as last week with the defending state champions in the three-hole. My prognosticating skills will be put to the test again this week with the aforementioned matchup at Old Mountain and Cumberland traveling to North Kingstown and La Salle. This week of games should make the Division I picture much clearer.

4. Coventry (4-2)

New team alert! The Oakers are on the board after a walk-off three-run home run courtesy of Anthony Colucci against North Kingstown on Saturday. Colucci’s game-breaking shot came with two outs in the seventh and landed Coventry its third straight win.

5. North Kingstown (3-3)

The Skippers didn’t fall off our rankings with the loss. Sometimes baseball happens and you tip your cap. NK can rebound with a game against Cumberland on tap.

Division II

1. East Providence (6-0)

The Townies had just one game over April break – an 8-2 final against Narragansett. Dylan Annicelli pitched six innings with one earned run and seven strikeouts in the win. East Providence travels to Prout and hosts East Greenwich this week.

2. Westerly (7-2)

Westerly jumps Barrington after topping the Eagles 1-0 on Friday. Andrew Bozek’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth scored Josh Ferando for the difference. Michael Poole threw a complete-game gem, fanning 10 with just three runs allowed.

3. Barrington (5-2)

Barrington’s loss only drops them a spot in a division looking for teams to join this trio. The Eagles topped Ponaganset during vacation for a split on the week. After Barrington, there is a ton of clubs with at least three wins and on the bubble as we head towards May.

On the bubble: Johnston, East Greenwich, Chariho, Narragansett, Middletown.

Division III

1. West Warwick (6-0)

I almost jinxed the Wizards after watching them beat the Times2 co-op 18-1 on Wednesday. A day later West Warwick escaped with a 6-5 win against Juanita Sanchez. But in West Warwick’s defense, it was their third game in a row and that’s taxing on any squad. Either way, they remain perfect and at the top of the division.

2. Rogers (5-1)

Rogers’ big week on the diamond included wins over Mount Pleasant and Exeter-West Greenwich on Monday. The Vikings managed just two hits against Kole Kilduff but were able to plate four runs for a 4-3 final. I detailed more about the division on Thursday.

3. Tolman/Shea (6-1)

The Pawtucket co-op suffered its first loss this season but remains at No. 3. They have Blackstone Valley Prep and Davies this week before a rematch against Mount Pleasant and EWG to end the month.

4. Exeter-West Greenwich (5-2)

It’s a one slot jump this week for EWG as they beat Classical 1-0 on the back of Kilduff. The star tossed a no-hitter with two walks and nine strikeouts and had the sacrifice fly to plate the game’s only run. Had EWG also beaten Rogers, the Knights would be in the two slot.

5. Classical (4-1)

Classical falls to the five-hole with three games scheduled week. The Purple defeated Tolman/Shea, 4-1, after the EWG loss. After West Warwick the division is ripe with parity and feels likes anyone could steal a win on the right day.
