Top Gun: Maverick has set another box office record one year after release

Almost a year after its release, Top Gun: Maverick is still flying high in some cinemas.

The Tom Cruise-led sequel of the 1986 hit Top Gun was released in May 2022, and dominated the box office at the time, but in one country it hasn't dropped from the top spot.

The Paramount Pictures and Skydance joint venture is still playing in cinemas in Japan, according to Deadline.

It seems that the continued popularity of the movie led it to its extension on the big-screen, and now it has become the biggest-ever film in that market.

Until now, Cruise's most popular film in Japan was the 2003 movie The Last Samurai, but this sequel has overtaken that success by grossing JPY 13.71B ($101.5M) to date. However, as the film is still screening in local cinemas, that number will continue to rise.

As a result, Top Gun: Maverick has become Paramount and Skydance's number-one movie of all time in Japan, which marks the film's second-biggest international triumph, flying just below the UK box office.

Alongside this, Top Gun: Maverick also earned six Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture and took home Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards.

After its raging success, fans of Top Gun: Maverick are eagerly waiting to hear if the franchise will get a third outing.

Yet, sadly, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has hinted that another movie might not be on the cards.

He previously said: "We're just enjoying this one. I have no idea. It took 35 years to make Top Gun: Maverick so... I'm not going to be around another 35 years."

In the meantime, the main cast has moved on to their next projects. Cruise is gearing up for his penultimate outing as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, that is set to be released in July.

While Glen Powell has been cast in Twisters, a sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister, though his role has not yet been confirmed.

Alongside this, Jennifer Connelly is currently working on Dark Matter, and Miles Teller is set to appear in The Gorge.

Top Gun: Maverick is available to stream now.
