There is too much feces to go for a swim in this Miami-area beach, health agency says

Florida health officials are recommending people not swim in a portion of Crandon Park beach because there’s too much feces in the water.

Two consecutive water samples collected Monday and Tuesday in the northern part of Crandon Park, 6747 Crandon Blvd., didn’t meet state and federal standards, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County said Wednesday evening in a news release.

The poor water quality is due to high levels of the enterococci bacteria, an indicator of the presence of fecal material in water, the agency noted.

“The result of the sampling indicates that water contact may pose an increased risk of illness, particularly for susceptible individuals,” the agency said.

According to the agency’s website, the same area also reported substandard water quality on March 20.

Recently taken samples in the southern portion of Crandon Park and in Key Biscayne Beach were satisfactory.
