Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Gets A Steam Deck-Exclusive Offline Mode

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater half pipe trick

Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater remake is an absolutely fantastic game with one major flaw: it can’t be played offline on PC. A recent patch for the game on Steam briefly got players’ hopes up, announcing an offline mode was finally being added… before they realized it was exclusive to the Steam Deck.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 got its first major patch, version 1.1, today, more than three years after the game first launched. Activision provided extensive patch notes for the update, though it’s hard not to be extensive when just two things were added:

  • The keyboard overlay now works properly for Steam Deck users.

  • Steam Deck users can now play offline.

That’s it — the entire patch notes consist of just two lines. Obviously both of these things are good – a broken keyboard overlay isn’t exactly ideal, and being able to play offline is what players have asked for for years – but unfortunately it’s only for Steam Deck users.

Players hoped that the update would let other PC players play offline too, but unfortunately that’s not the case. Reports started coming in immediately on Twitter, Reddit, and Steam, with players saying they can’t launch the game while offline. GLHF has confirmed these reports — we’ve found you can get into the game’s start screen, but actually getting into either of the games throws up an error message.

It’s especially frustrating because the PC version of the game is the only one that requires you to be online to play — on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, you can play through from start to finish without ever connecting to the internet. We can probably guess why the PC version is different (piracy concerns) but that doesn’t make it any less annoying.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was developed by Vicarious Visions, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, which was recently acquired by Microsoft. Vicarious Visions was merged with Blizzard in 2022 following the release of the Tony Hawk remakes, where it was renamed to Blizzard Albany. A remake of subsequent games, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, was canceled following the merger.
