Former NFL head coach Tony Dungy took some heat for what he said at a Florida bill signing event on Monday afternoon.

Dungy, who coached the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, stood behind Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as he signed a “pro-fatherhood” bill.

“I asked [Abe Brown], how do those young boys (19, 20, 21) get [in prison]? And he told me it’s not socio-economic, it’s not racial, it’s not education, it’s none of that. 95% of these boys did not grow up with their dad,” Dungy said Monday.

Dungy faced some criticism on Monday for his appearance, but he had a direct response to that on Wednesday.

“2 days ago I spoke on behalf of a Florida bill that supports dads & families and it offended some people. 14 yrs ago Pres Obama said the same things almost verbatim. I’m assuming people were outraged at him too. I am serving the Lord so I’ll keep supporting dads and families,” he tweeted.

Dungy’s Wednesday tweet has more than 50,000 likes.

“I believe ppl are concerned how the data will be used. Is it to identify a problem to do something substantial to prevent it from happening or a statistic to blame the communities experiencing the problem. Obama’s intent compared to Desantis are not the same. I leave it there,” one fan tweeted.

“Tony a bigger part of it wasn’t the debatable statistics, but the company you chose to keep. Perception is everything sometimes. Do kids need a dad, IMO yes they need a male figure, but one who is committed and understands its not about them anymore. Respect as always,” another fan added.

As always, social media is splintered.
