Toms River contractor banned from NJ contracts over labor laws; see who else made the list

A Toms River contractor that owes the state nearly $40,000 for violating state labor laws has been added to a list of New Jersey companies that have been barred from state, county and municipal contracts until they pay their liabilities, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development said.

R.A. Florio Building Contractors Inc., which also had an office in Roselle Park, was ordered to pay $39,556 for violations of unemployment compensation law, the temporary disability benefits law and the family temporary disability leave law, the department said.

The company was one of 19 New Jersey businesses that were added to the Labor Department's Workplace Accountability in Labor List, known as The WALL, a publicly available list of companies that have violated the state's labor law and haven't resolved their outstanding fines and fees.

The WALL was enacted by the state Legislature in 2020 in a bid to help the Labor Department combat worker misclassification and exploitation. Businesses receive letters warning that their company’s name will be posted to The WALL unless they resolve their outstanding liabilities. They are given 20 days from when they receive the notice to pay in full or challenge the decision.

The list was launched last September. It now has 101 businesses that collectively owe $12.6 million either directly to their workers or for unpaid taxes or contributions.

R.A. Florio Building Contractors was ordered to pay the liability in December 2020. The company couldn't be reached for comment. Its last location was in Union, and the phone number listed has been disconnected.

The 19 new additions to the list owe a total of $1.1 million for violations that include unpaid contributions to the unemployment insurance fund and state disability benefits fund.
