Tomb Raider Is The Next Special Magic: The Gathering Expansion

Magic: The Gathering has been on a roll lately with its pop culture crossover expansions, with franchises like Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings recently gracing players’ card sleeves. Its next crossover expansion is one that is a bit unexpected: Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider will be headed to Magic: The Gathering as a Secret Lair drop, an initiative consisting of very limited (and often very small) sets of cards. In this case, Lara Croft and her associated cards will be part of a drop that includes just seven cards, some of which are existing cards with new, Tomb Raider-inspired artwork.

Here are the Tomb Raider cards that will be included in the set:

  • 1x Lara Croft, Tomb Raider

  • 1x Search for Azcanta // Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin as "Heart of the Explorer // The Lost Valley"

  • 1x Anger of the Gods as "Storms of Yamatai"

  • 1x Bow of Nylea as "The Grim Whisper"

  • 1x Shadowspear as "Totec's Spear"

  • 1x Academy Ruins as "Kitezh, Sunken City"

  • 1x Treasure token

A non-foil packet of the seven cards will set you back $39.99 USD, while a shinier traditional foil set will cost a little bit more, at $49.99 USD.

The Tomb Raider drop will be available on the Secret Lair website from November 20, 2023, at 9am PT. It’s expected to be quite limited, but if you’re interested and ready to go when the cards drop you’ll probably get one, if previous drops are anything to go by.

MtG has been going hard on crossovers since the launch of the Universes Beyond initiative in 2021, which started after a restructuring of Wizard of the Coast and parent company Hasbro as a whole. The initiative has brought crossovers with franchises like Transformers, Jurassic World, Warhammer, Arcane, and Street Fighter, and upcoming collaborations are planned for Fallout, Final Fantasy, and Assassin’s Creed.

Perhaps the more interesting crossover, however, comes from the recent announcement that Marvel superheroes are coming to Magic: The Gathering. The superhero-themed cards aren’t due to be released anytime soon – Marvel says it’ll be 2025 at the earliest – but there have been hints that this could be more than just a one-and-done.
