Tom Hanks lands unexpected new TV job
Tom Hanks is making the jump from the big screen to the small screen in an NBC and BBC series.
The two-time Oscar winner has signed on to become the voice of a new natural history series The Americas, according to comments made by NBC boss Paul Telegedy (via Deadline).
This ten-part series, which comes from Planet Earth producer BBC Studios Natural History Unit, will explore the volatile ecosystems in the world's largest landmass of North and South America.
Filmmakers will share incredible stories of life in the wild, as well as document the ways climate change has impacted life for all variety of species living in the Americas.
The series marks the first time Tom Hanks has narrated an entertainment series for TV, though he has lent his voice to historical docu-drams such as Killing Lincoln and The Road We've Traveled about Barack Obama's presidency.
Production company BBC Studios Natural History Unit, based in Bristol, is a division of the BBC Studios production team that specifically produce factual films and series.
These producers have previously won four Emmys and 11 BAFTAs, and produced such notable natural history series as David Attenborough's Natural Curiosities, Blue Planet Live, Springwatch and Steve Backshall's Deadly 60.
While Hanks is best known for his film work, he has also become a prolific producer of acclaimed TV series — having won seven Primetime Emmy Awards for projects such as docu-series From the Earth to the Moon to dramas Big Love and Olive Kitteridge.
Hanks most recently appeared on the big screen in the Academy Award-nominated biopic Elvis as Col Tom Parker, and played Geppetto in the Disney+ live-action version of Pinocchio.
Some upcoming acting projects for Hanks include Wes Anderson's science fiction comedy Asteroid City and a reunion with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis in the drama film Here.
