Tom Brady loves Patrick Mahomes’ fire, has full confidence in him and the Chiefs

Former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is fully aware of what can take place in the NFL playoffs.

That is to say, anything can happen in the postseason, but he acknowledged on the “Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray” podcast that finishing the regular season strong is important.

“Teams have won the Super Bowl who were the one seed, teams have won the Super Bowl as the sixth seed,” Brady said. “You’ve got to get in the postseason to give yourself a chance to win the Super Bowl, and at the same time, you want to be going in with a lot of momentum.”

Brady mentioned the 2015 Patriots who started 10-0, then dropped four of six games and ended up losing to the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

The Chiefs have had their struggles this season. They’ve lost three of their last four games, including Monday’s 20-14 defeat to the Raiders. In that game, CBS Sports’ cameras caught Mahomes chewing out the offensive linemen.

Brady loved seeing Mahomes’ passion.

“There’s still a long way to go to determine who is the Super Bowl champ. There’s a lot of football left to be played,” Brady said. “I love seeing people dig deep. This is the first year I’ve really watched as a fan. And I’ve really enjoyed that aspect of it, too.

“You could see the fire in Patrick Mahomes (Monday). You could see the fire in Dak Prescott. You could see the fire in Deebo Samuel. You could see the fire in Lamar Jackson. These guys are competitive, they’re playing well and they’re giving themselves a great chance to win as they continue to go forward, and that’s what competitive football is all about.”

Gray said he saw comparisons between Mahomes and Brady because of how Mahomes has talked about being confident that the Chiefs have what it takes to be successful despite the offensive struggles.

Did Brady agree with that?

“Well, you’re gonna have confidence that if you do the right thing you can win the game, and you can try to do the right thing and not do it,” Brady said. “So, I mean, I felt like I, every game that I went into, I felt like we had a plan to win. Doesn’t mean that I always won. I lost a lot, but I love the way Patrick approaches it. Believe me, with the confidence that he has as a player, I don’t think that he thinks anyone can really stop him. I think, whatever line that was, ‘We didn’t lose. We ran outta time.’ ...

“Sometimes I played in games where we got our ass kicked so bad I was like, ‘I just want this game to be over. We gotta go back to the drawing board.’ Other times, I felt like, ‘OK, we would’ve got ‘em if there were another quarter.’ It’s a four-quarter game and sometimes those four quarters go really fast. I’m never one to jump to conclusions. I never did as a player, too. I always was confident. And I still believe in what the Chiefs are doing. I mean, I’m never going to bet against a guy like Patrick ‘cause I think he’s such a phenomenal player and leader.”
