The fallout of the NFL’s impending investigation into Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross for tanking could force a sale of the team. And if that happens, Tom Brady is one of many people who could pounce.

Earlier this month, speculation emerged that Brady was a potential candidate to join an ownership group led by businessman Bruce Beal. Ross has remained adamant that he won’t sell, but pressure is starting to mount.

ProFootballTalk suggested on Thursday that Brady could buy “a sliver” of the team from Beal if such a move happens. But PFT further hinted that if Brady’s fortune continues to grow, he could eventually afford to buy the team outright.

The new report is likely to send the Brady-Dolphins ownership speculation into overdrive though. A quick glance at “Brady Dolphins” on Twitter shows a wide range of reactions to this possibility:

Tom Brady certainly wouldn’t be the first retired athlete to parlay his on-field success into team ownership. Derek Jeter, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan all used their immense fortunes to do the same.

Interestingly enough, Brady and Jeter would effectively be neighbors in Miami if such a move took place. Jeter is the principal owner of the Miami Marlins.

At least one fan finds the idea interesting:

Tom Brady’s personal net worth is believed to be upwards of $250 million. That won’t buy him an entire NFL team in this day and age.

But if Brady has some savvy investments in the works, it may only be a matter of time before he’s in a position to join that exclusive club.

Assuming that’s something Brady actually wants…
