Tina Yothers From 'Family Ties' Is Unrecognizable

Before he was the star of such 1980s classics as Teen Wolf and Back to the Future, Michael J. Fox was better known as Alex P. Keaton, the overachieving eldest child of Elyse (Meredith Baxter) and Steven Keaton (Michael Gross) on Family Ties. The sitcom followed followed the fictional family, who frequently clashed because Alex’s Republican views were at odds with the more liberal opinions of his former hippie parents, from 1982 to 1989. 'Family Ties' cast: Where are they now?

Michael J. Fox (Alex P. Keaton)

Fox was already a movie star by the time Family Ties ended, but he soon followed the show with Back to the Future II and III, cementing his status as a Hollywood fixture. In the 1990s, he starred in The American President and the sitcom Spin City, which ran from 1996 to 2002. He later appeared in Boston Legal, The Good Wife, and The Michael J. Fox Show.

Fox officially retired from acting in 2020 because of the progression of his Parkinson’s disease (he was diagnosed with the illness in 1991). That same year, he published the memoir No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, and in 2023 he appeared in Still, a documentary about his battle with Parkinson’s. He's also integral to the success of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which he founded in 2000, about two years after he went public with his struggle.

Fox married Tracy Pollan in 1988 after she joined Family Ties in Season 4 as his love interest. They share four children: son Sam (born in 1989), twin daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler (born in 1995), and daughter Esmé (born in 2001).

Meredith Baxter (Elyse Keaton)

Baxter is arguably still best known as the Keaton family matriarch, but she’s racked up plenty of credits since the show ended, starring in shows like The Faculty, Cold Case, Dan Vs., Switched at Birth, Finding Carter and Being Mary Jane. She also reunited with Fox on a 1997 episode of Spin City. In 2011, she published the book Untied: A Memoir of Family, Fame, and Floundering.

Baxter, a breast cancer survivor, has been married to wife Nancy Locke since 2013.

Michael Gross (Steven Keaton)

After wrapping up his turn as Alex’s dad on Family Ties, Gross went on to star as Burt Gummer in the Tremors franchise, which kicked off in 1990. In 2020, he starred in Tremors: Shrieker Island, the seventh film in the series. His TV credits include How I Met Your Mother, The Young and the Restless, Grace and Frankie, Suits and The Affair. Like Baxter, he reunited with his TV son on Spin City in a 2000 episode.

Gross has been married to wife Elza Bergeron since 1984. He is the stepfather of her two children from a previous relationship.

Justine Bateman (Mallory Keaton)

After her turn as eldest Keaton daughter Mallory, Bateman went on to star in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Men Behaving Badly, Desperate Housewives and Men in Trees. In 2006, she made a cameo appearance on younger brother Jason Bateman’s show Arrested Development and in 2021 she made her directorial debut with the film Violet starring Olivia Munn and Justin Theroux. These days, she's very vocal about keeping AI out of entertainment.

On the personal front, she married husband Mark Fluent, with whom she shares two children, in 2001.

Tina Yothers (Jennifer Keaton)

Following her stint on Family Ties, Yothers starred as Tonya Harding in a 1993 TV movie titled Spunk. She later played herself in shows including Married … With Children and appeared on the reality shows Celebrity Fit Club, Celebrity Wife Swap and What Not to Wear.

Brian Bonsall (Andy Keaton)

Bonsall, who played the baby of the family, went on to appear in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Father Hood and Blank Check. He has largely stopped acting and instead took up a career as a musician, forming the band Late Bloomers in 1998 and later touring with The Ataris. More recently, he’s been a member of the group Sunset Silhouette.

Bonsall married wife Courtney Tuck in 2017. They welcomed a son in 2019.

Tracy Pollan (Ellen Reed)

Pollan only appeared in 13 episodes of Family Ties, but she has an outsize association with the show because she and Fox married shortly after meeting on set. She went on to star in several TV movies and joined her husband on Spin City and The Michael J. Fox Show. In 2014, she and her relatives published a cookbook titled The Pollan Family Table. Her brother, Michael Pollan, the author of books like The Omnivore’s Dilemma, wrote the foreword. More recently, Tracy appeared in the 2022 Netflix series Inventing Anna.
