Blackhawk's Mia Piocquidio carries the ball during Monday's game against Knoch at Blackhawk High School.

Just one month ago, Blackhawk girl’s lacrosse senior Mia Piocquidio achieved a goal that she set out to reach when she started playing lacrosse at the high school level as she reached the 200-goal plateau in her career against Aquinas Academy back on April 10.

When Piocquidio reached the 200-goal mark, Blackhawk assistant coach Mike DeJesus was happy for the senior for her reaching the milestone, but believed that was not the last time that she would break a record with the Cougars in her high school career.

“We were all so excited for her to get that goal. In my eyes, this is just one more milestone that she is going to have. Scoring 200 goals is not the ceiling, it is the basement of what she can achieve and she is going to go a lot farther.”

This past Monday, the senior attacker eclipsed yet another career milestone in the Cougars' 20-6 victory over North Catholic as she became Blackhawk’s all-time single-season scorer with her four-goal effort against the Trojans, she became the school’s all-time single-season scoring record holder as she scored 79-goals throughout this season.

Along with becoming the school’s all-time single-season scoring record holder for girl’s lacrosse Piocquidio also registered her 100th career assist as a Cougar marking yet another milestone surpassed as she continues to etch her name into the history books with Blackhawk.

Piocquidio and the Cougars will have one more conference matchup against South Fayette on Wednesday before Blackhawk will set its sights on another run to the WPIAL Championship game at Robert Morris University at the end of the month.

Jaxson Zahn No-Hits Quips

Throughout New Brighton’s up-and-down season, Jaxson Zahn has been a steady presence on the mound for the Lions as they continue to fight for a playoff spot with just a few remaining games on their schedule.

Last Monday was no different for the sophomore as he tossed a no-hitter in New Brighton’s 20-0 win over Aliquippa. Zahn put up an impressive line going five innings allowing just two walks while fanning eight of the 17 batters that he faced and also throwing 61 percent of his pitches for strikes.

Just as a sophomore, Zahn has been on point as he has posted a 1.44 ERA through just over 24 innings of work while also striking out 31 batters throughout the season.

Along with the no-hitter, Zahn also had a pretty solid day at the plate for New Brighton as he went 2-for-5 while driving in two runs and hitting a double in the victory.

Zahn and the Lions will now face South Side Beaver on Monday and Tuesday as they look to find their way into the playoffs.

Phil McCarren Earns 200th At OLSH

The Chargers have put together a masterful season thus far and look to make a deep run in the postseason as OLSH is on a roll entering into its final series of the regular season at Seton LaSalle, the Chargers are currently riding a nine-game winning streak.

A big reason for their success comes from their manager Phil McCarren who reached two career milestones this past week for OLSH as he collected his 200th career victory as a manager in his 300th career game at the helm for the Chargers.

While winning his 200th career game as a manager was an accomplishment McCarren won’t soon forget, the part of the day that he will cherish the most was that he was able to coach his 300th game in his 15th year as OLSH’s skipper.

“When I realized we were going to win the game on Monday and that would mark our program's 200th win with me at the helm, the thing I reflected on the most was that this was also my 300th game as head coach at OLSH," McCarren said. "I thought back through the years, the coaches, the players and I have had a lot of great accomplishments and memories. It has been a great privilege to be the head baseball coach at OLSH for these 15 seasons. I’ve had the opportunity to work with great people, players, coaches, parents and our administrators. I'm very thankful and, God willing, I hope to be able to continue as OLSH's head baseball coach for years to come.”

OLSH will now look to use the momentum that it has built up throughout the regular season and will now look to feed off of that success with the playoffs just around the corner.

Two Eligibility Hearings for Aliquippa Transfers Cancelled With Cases Dismissed

This past week, the WPIAL canceled the hearings for two of several transfers coming into the Aliquippa throughout the offseason after Central Valley decided to no longer contest the transfers into the Quips program.

Sophomore Joseph Work and freshman Khalil Ellerbee were the two players to have hearings based on their transfer paperwork to determine their eligibility for the upcoming season.

A statement from the WPIAL stated that the Central Valley administration informed the league that it did not have evidence of the individuals transferring to Aliquippa due to athletics.

In his sophomore season at Central Valley, Work compiled 89 tackles throughout the season for Central Valley.

With the hearings for Ellerbee and Work canceled, the Quips now have five total transfers that did not have to go through eligibility hearings as Sa’Nir Brooks and Larry Moon who transferred from Central Catholic and Ray Miller who transferred from Seton LaSalle all were granted eligibility without hearings.

Outside of the transfer eligibility hearings, Aliquippa will now shift its sights to the continued hearing on its case with the PIAA which will continue later this month to determine whether or not it will continue to play up in Class 5A for the next two seasons.
