Timeline of Texas terror: Officials detail events of Uvalde school shooting

The horror lasted nearly and hour and a half.

Texas state police leaders laid out a detailed timeline Friday of the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw laid out the actions of 18-year-old killer Salvador Ramos — and the inaction of police officers on the scene.

11:27 a.m.: The door where Ramos entered is propped open by a teacher.

11:28 a.m.: Ramos crashes his pickup truck in a ditch outside the school. Two men at a nearby funeral home hear the crash and run to the scene. They see a man with a gun get out of the truck. Ramos shoots at them but misses.

11:33 a.m.: Ramos enters the building. He shoots in “Room 111 or Room 112,” according to McCraw. In just the opening few minutes, he fires at least 100 bullets.

11:35 a.m.: Three officers with the Uvalde Police Department enter through the same door as Ramos. A four-man team follows them shortly afterward, including three Uvalde officers and a deputy with the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office. Two of the first three officers move straight toward Ramos. They’re grazed by bullets as Ramos shoots at them, according to McCraw.

11:37 a.m.: Another several rounds are fired.

Some previously reported details were missing from McCraw’s timeline. He did not mention when Ramos shot his grandmother, who remains hospitalized. He also did not mention exactly when Ramos barricaded himself in a classroom.

It remains unclear, at least publicly, exactly which classroom Ramos was in when police gathered outside. As for the decision to wait, McCraw was clear: “It was the wrong decision.”
