It’s time for the time warp again: KC theaters showing ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’

A pair of directors working with treasurer Brad Rackers at Summit Theatre suggested the group perform “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

Rackers and the committee thought it’d be fun and now for the first time ever, Summit Theatre Group brings the show to the Longview Cultural Arts Center in Lee’s Summit.

“Many of us grew up seeing the movie, going to performances where actors performed in front of the screen and even seeing live versions of the musical,” Rackers said. “We wanted to share that experience with new audiences.”

The cult classic movie fits with the Halloween season, and the play Rackers and the group put together stays true to the 1975 film featuring Tim Curry, Richard O’Brien, Susan Sarandon and Meat Loaf.

He said they added a few new songs to the mix, but that it won’t take away from the experience.

If you missed out on the show last week, you’ll have three chances to see it this weekend:

  • Friday at 7 p.m.

  • Saturday at 7 p.m.

  • Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets cost $15 in advance and $18 at the door.

Be prepared to partici — wait for it — pate if you’re a part of the crowd. Props, candles, flashlights, rice, singing, dancing and much more are in the cards, and Rackers is looking forward to it.

“Our actors are ready and excited to engage with the audience throughout the performance and when the audience gets engaged it is a whole lot more fun for everyone involved,” Rackers said.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW EXPERIENCE

The Black Box puts their own spin on the film, performing it outside underneath the stars and the moonlight. Photo ops, themed cocktails and a jack-o-lantern display add to the experience.

Tickets cost $30, and seating is first-come, first-serve. The Black Box asks you to bring your own lawn chair since it’s outside or you can rent a chair from the theatre.

Performances are happening from now until Halloween, so if you miss out this weekend, you’ll have more opportunities to watch. Find a date that works for you here.

SHOCKTOBER: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Screenland Armour Theater in North Kansas City hosts its annual showing of the film on Oct. 29. It’s an interactive and rowdy screening with audience participation, props, a burlesque routine and a shadowcast.

Tickets are $15 and the show starts at 10:30 p.m. The doors for the screening open at 10 p.m.
